what good is one?
I figure if i get the WIFI versions, i can play youtube on TV.
But I keep not getting one for the past two week-ends.
I'm tempted, but should i use the $80 on LDs instead?

i'm going to post on your topic again ;)
others will answer this better as they will hopefully own one, i don't

i believe that you can also do instant streaming like netflix through your bluray onto your TV.
that that's a nice feature.

also if there are movies that you want that have just been released you "could" get them on bluray
and not on DVD and then upgrade in the future.

i don't own one since most of the stuff i already have on LD or DVD, but i have thought of getting one.

everytime i get a new film not on LD i think, should i buy this on DVD or get a bluray player and then get it on BD
and i end up buying it on DVD and never thinking about it agin.

A BR player costs as much as one nice LD. Get one.

Or get a PS3, since they are in many ways the best BR players still since they are really fast (by BR standards) and get all the updates for Netflix, Hulu, Amazone, etc which isn't going to be the case with some brand-free POS deck.

I'd recommend getting a Blu-ray player because they are now inexpensive.

I buy all new music releases that are available on Blu-ray as opposed to the DVD version.
The audio and picture quality is the best available.

For titles not available on Blu-ray I tend to buy the laserdisc versions still as the audio is better than DVD versions.
So I view Blu-ray as a great supplementary format rather than a replacement format for what I collect.

I was considering it last weekend, and then only considering movies made since 2007 for it since that would be the BluRay era, but what about movies made from 1980-2000? which version of those movies are best-LD or BR? I'd prefer LD due to the possibility of changes made on the BR version.
Is there a list somewhere that tells which movies are INTACT in different formats, and which movies were CHANGED.
I have read articles over the last decade about the debate of pan-and-scan vS letterbox, and how movies get cropped and fans complain that parts were cut off the screen in the FULL SCREEN(Pan and Scan) versions. That's why, when I'm buying LOTS from eBay of LDs, if I get both versions, i'm just keeping them (like some of my Star Trek LDS...i'm not sure if there are ANY differences, but I'm not taking any chances...plus, i enjoy the art differences).

There is a Laserdisc used in the ABCDEF comparison test at the beaver site. :) DANCES WITH WOVES (1990) http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcompar ... wolves.htm

THE GREAT ESCAPE (1963)
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcompar ... escape.htm

Test review at the Widescreen Review of "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968). I don't have the same pressing they used but I have one of the later ones with fair average low end rumble when Bowman travels though the stargate. The later DVD R2 lousy  followed by the even lousier bluray   The Laserdisc and the region 1 DVD I bought as I couldn't bear to listen to bluray any-more, the Laserdisc and the out of print MGM R1 DVD wins.

I finally bought a blu-ray player last year. I waited until the Region-Free players were more affordable. That was the requirement for me.

If that's what's good enough for you, just google "region free blu-ray" and you'll find plenty. Mine is a Toshiba model that I paid $125 for.

About Cinavia, it doesn't matter at all if you don't watch pirated movies.

It matters as I rip my movies to my server, and stream them via my BD player. Cinevania messes that up.

If your not that enthusiastic about blu ray I wouldn't recommend buying a player.

I went along with blu ray from the beginning and only recently decided to sell my collection off as I would rather invest in laserdiscs and continue to buy DVDs which are very cheap now.

If you wait a few years the same will happen to blu ray they will be just as cheap as dvds,is it worth investing in now? Like I say it depends if its something you really want
