Hi,

does anyone know a website which is somehow like the lddb but for the VHS format ?

I mean I must admit I still buy some VHS tapes if I can get them cheap as the sound quality can
be pretty good ( Hi-Fi Stereo is better than DD 2.0 in my opinion ) and there are some very
interesting releases for this format. Plus the tapes I have still look pretty much the same after many years
so original tapes seem to last for a longer period it seems.

I have about 100 VHS tapes that I bought many years ago (>20 years) and they seem to be unchanged from when they were new. They do indeed seem to last.

I haven't bought a new VHS tape in a good many years. Movies that I buy now are either HD-DVD, LD or CED formats.

I have a Sony SLV-798HF vcr which has adaptive/expert picture control. This feature adjusts the vcr to the condition of the video heads and tape to provide the best picture possible. I noticed that there is a difference and that the PQ is above CED; but, not nearly LD's. I have an RCA VCR that I bought new in 1995 and it has less PQ than the Sony.

Yes they do seem to last indeed. Picture quality on my VHS tapes is worse than LD but some tapes look really good like my US tape of Vanilla Sky.

there's a handful of pre-recorded Movies out there on VHS that look smashingly good, for videotape at least.

few, however, can truly demonstrate what the format is truly capable of quite like a direct recording
on premium blank tape stock, utilizing a high-end VCR, fed signal from a high quality SD DVD source such as this;

http://vhscollector.com/ This is the closest you'll get to a VHS database. They seem to be missing a lot of releases (as expected for a format with so much stuff on it), though.

Hi !

I have seen that site before. A site like lddb.com would be wonderful for other formats, too :(

I like discogs for CDs and Vinyl but they are very strict about submitting new titles. Everything has to be perfect. It is really annoying.

We've got a few threads about VHS . . .

VHS

VHS circa 2002-2006

Does VHS have any real advantages that hold up today?

Maybe it's been a while since I've popped a tape in, but those stills look considerably better than what I remember from VHS.

performance of the vaunted MITSUBISHI HS-U80, while not as good as the JVC HR-S8000U seen above, isn't all too terribly bad a performer, IMHO;
