My CD collection is spread over 2-200 disc Sony CD changers (CDP-CX230 models). I have a slink-e interface box that is connected to the 2 changers and a Win98 PC. I have software on the the Win98 PC that talks to the Slink-E that then talks to the CD changers. The result is that the Win98 can control the CD changers allowing me to inventory the changers and playback anyone of the CD's. The software allows me to setup and store playlists for playback. I can add up to 6 more 400-disc changers should I ever need the room. The software even allows me to play each CD completely or select individual tracks. I can randomize the CD's/tracks in a playlist. Unfortunately, the software engineer died some years ago so the software is no longer available. Also, the slink-e interface box is unavailable as the manufacturer is out of business. (I have 2 spare slink-e boxes stored away in case of a breakdown).

Since the days when I had a 5 disc turntable I noticed the SQ loss from single disc players. I have hundreds of CDs but prefer to playback in a decent single disc player. I sacrafice convenience for quality. How do your CDs actually sound being played back on a 200 disc changer? Have you heard your discs on a well-regarded dedicated player?

No. I play CD's mainly for background sound to help mask the tinnitus that I have in both my ears. Without background music whether from the TV or radio or CD, I would hear a constant ringing sound that is there every waking hour of the day. There is no cure for the sound so I have had to live with it for the last 45+ years. There are times when I put on a CD for the music; but, the ringing is still there faintly in the background. This is why I do not consider myself a purist when it comes to music. To me, it enhances the pleasure in watching movies whether the movie comes from LD's, DVD's, BD's, etc.

I like my CD changers in that I do not have to handle the CD's nor alphabetize them as the software and hardware I have will do that for me.

I do not know if either CD changer can give SQ equal to a high end CD player. I suspect not as they were built for the consumer masses and to a target price. There are not many people that can afford a high end CD player. I know I cannot.

Both my CD changers are at least 10 years old; but, still play like new. If either one fails, I have 2 more that I bought a few years ago to replace any broken ones.

As I stated above, I am not a music purist. I know that I could spend megabucks on new speakers with little improvement in my listening pleasure. So, I see little need for speaker upgrades. Don't get me wrong. I can tell when a speaker is distorting sound and I do not like it one bit. But, to hear a pin drop from a speaker and consider it justification for a $1000 upgrade is not worth it to me.

I like collecting Vinyl records ( they sound so much better than CD in many cases ) and Laserdiscs because it is not possible to make an exact 1:1 copy of them.
I also collect to a smaller degree CDs, DVDs, Blu Rays, HD DVD discs, VHS tapes, etc.
But I also like collecting Confederate memorabilia from the Civil War period hence my nick - Confederate :) I also sometimes buy coins from the Roman period but only
if I get them for cheap. They are really cool !

As a CD devotee I have to say that conversely, in many cases the CD sounds so much better than the vinyl version.

There are a lot of well regarded players that are inexpensive second hand. I have a mint 1989 Sony CDP-991 I got off ebay for $50. Not quite Sony ES grade but solid, sounds great and instantly loads and plays back unlike modern players.

However if you're not listening critically anyway then your setup sounds good. At least you know your sources are uncompressed and that's a good start.

That's why you need to collect both :-)

I try to aim for SACD or vinyls whenever possible, HD Audio download 2nd option if well mastered (DSD or 44.1-192KHz/24bit).
CD as a last resort if it's the only option available.

Try to stay away from 1995-2010 CD mixes basically.

http://dr.loudness-war.info/

Looking at my 25 most recent purchases on my Discogs account, I can see:

  • Vinyl - Heavy Metal = 12
  • SACD 2ch - Jazz = 6
  • Vinyl - Progressive Rock = 2
  • 24/48Khz - Electro = 2
  • CD - Heavy Metal = 2 (to get the 2013 remasters, I already had the early 1990's original releases)
  • Vinyl - Electro = 1

When I said "There are not many people that can afford a high end CD player. I know I cannot. " I should have said a "high end NEW CD player" instead. I do agree that you can get some good used equipment off E-bay. Once in a while, you will get a clunker; but, that is the chance you take. I bought my AVR (Sony DA2ES) used off E-bay and it has performed as though it was new. I bought 2 Pioneer CLD-D406 players that both came to me with broken M-holders. The third player was the charm as it worked the first time it was plugged in.

Yeah I think most are aware of the "loudness war" but there are still so many Japanese and specialist releases in that timeframe that are fine.

I must admit almost all the best sounding CDs I have are from the 1980s though. You got what you paid (a lot) for back then.

DA2ES is nice.

Going to try to fix my DA50ES today! It has a clicking switch/relay. Other than that still sounds amazing. Need that sound again (Have a relatively crappy Sony QS amp in its place at the moment.)

Yes, the DA2ES is a nice AVR. It just lacks HDMI jacks. I just got a Sony DA3300ES AVR last Wednesday to replace the DA2ES. The 3300 has the HDMI bus ( 3 in and 1 out) as well as phono, and other baseband RCA jacks. The 3300 also does upconversion and digitization of the video signal. In other words, a composite video input at 480 is upconverted to 1080 and then digitized to go out the HDMI output jack. It does this on the component inputs, too. The newer AVR's have almost no composite inputs (maybe 3) and do not do upconversion (I think. I maybe wrong on this). The 3300 still has a Control-S port so I can continue to keep by DVD changer in the closet.

Why do you need HDMI? Part of the reason these old amps are such a bargain is no HDMI, which, I don't need (I do RGB component for DVD and composite/s-video for LD).

I need HDMI because I have 2 disc players that output on HDMI. One is a Sony UBP-X800 that I got in June and is a 2017 model. The X800 can play just about any disc made today. I say today as it cannot play LD's. It can play CD's, DVD's, DVD-A's, SACD's, BD's, 3D BD's, and UHD's (4K discs) to name a few. The X800 has only 2- HDMI jacks and a coaxial jack for output. I also have a Toshiba HD-DVD player that has a HDMI jack. So, to play the X800 or the Toshiba I need an AVR with HDMI. I also have an HDTV that has 2 HDMI jacks for input. So, I have to give in and accept HDMI as the future cabling method (that is, until a another cabling system comes along).

An FYI, the Sony UBP-X800 is now $240 USD for an awesome player for the money.

I have a love / hate relationship with Cotton 2. I want to love it but it keeps hating me :D

Many of the games on Segas ST-V system for the arcade are available on console too. Mostly the Mega Drive. My favorite game for the ST-V is Sheinryu. Good mechanics and a great soundtrack.
