Took better pictures of the covers. I put Prisoner of the Cannibal God back into the "original" camshell since it has some old rental stickers. I like to keep that, since it is part of the history of the tape.

Got a few more tapes yesterday. Ebola Syndrome is a Hong Kong release, which is my first HK VHS and also category III movie in general. From what I understand, category III is equivalent to the US NC-17 rating. Cannibal the Musical is an australian big box that has been imported officially, so it has the registration sticker from the Norwegian authorities. A Terra-Cotta Warrior is a Swedish release. The Shocks is a vintage bootleg of Shocks: Eyewitness to the World (Za shokkusu: sekai no mokugekisha) (1986) [70033-88], most likely done with very expensive NTSC to PAL converters back in the day.

Lol Cannibal: the musical was my favorite movie as younger, still good! I had it on VHS in the 90s.

Seems to be sellthru tape, no idea if it differs from rental release tho. Looks like excellent B-flick, 10 extra points for screenshot of burning 740 :)

I always been told that this...was a production of Mats Helge (Ninja Mission), but now when I look it up on imdb its only Björn Carlström mentioned. But I guess it was from the "mats helge factory". Officially it seems that he is not credited for this movie.

But anyway, its recorded from my home grounds on the west coast of sweden.

Picked up a few more tapes. Probably the last I will buy from that place. It gets more and more expensive everytime. It started out cheap, around 5 USD per tape. Now the video store owner demands at least 30 per tape. My impression is that he for some reason thinks I'm ripping him off, so he increases the price every time. I feel it is not worth it since I literally have to spend hours and hours piecing together the movies. Karatetigeren (Fighting Tiger) took me like 16 hours. The cover were on the 3rd floor, and the cassette were behind a stack of tapes, at the bottom of another. To top it off, among UK pre-cert tapes. No system what so ever... Just outrageous to pay auction prices considering the amount of work I have to do, and usually the covers, or tapes, are in poor shape. The condition doesn't matter, still have to pay the same a mint one would cost at auction. No refunds if the tape turns out to be damaged and unplayable. What ticked me off now last time was that another guy who was there last week to buy tapes to resell them, got insane discounts. Apparently if you're a reseller you get the very best deals.

In this lot, one of my favorite covers is Atomskolen (Class of Nuke 'Em High). Favorite title would be Ti Små Negerbarn (Ten Little n***ers). Probably don't have that title on newer releases.

Got some tapes a couple of days ago. Just had to pick up Warbus VHS because of the cover. Peeping Tom is a betamax that I got cheap and added to the same parcel while I were at it. It is NTSC, and I don't own a NTSC beta-player. I am considering to get one since the NTSC equipment is in general much better.

Thrashin' is also a betamax, but that one is a bit funny. Picked it up because it got an age rating of 18 (US equivalent would be the NC-17 rating). The reason? Most likely because skateboards were illegal to use, buy and sell at the time that movie came out... Skateboards were banned in Norway between 1978 and 1989.

Still struggling with Tomb Raider 2001 VHS vs DVD vs Bluray.....the VHS shows the full height frame , the DVD has cropped in height and width and the Bluray shows
the full width of the film but still cropped frame in height plus DNRed image.....I'm tripping what a disaster!

No, the film was shot on Super35 while having an OAR of 2.35:1. An open matte transfer will of course contain more information on top and bottom which isn't supposed to be seen. I.e. in Terminator 2, in the scene with the phone booth, you can see that the phone is destroyed even before Arnold punches it if you watch the open matte version. If seen in 2.35:1 the image tilts at the right time making it a non-issue.

thanks nissling for you wisdom......so the VHS is made
from the Open matte version for 4:3 home releases.....

....can we conclude then that the intended director version should be the DVD Bluray right?

I ve found some scenes interesting on vhs showing
more scenery in Cambodian temple anyway the lack
of resolution now drives me to the DVD which is very analogic...thank you man!

note: I would love an Open Matte of Tomb Raider
in UHD Bluray.... :)

Thing is that pretty much every film shot on 35mm with an original aspect ratio of either 1.85:1 or 1.66:1 has a negative ratio of 1.37:1. It's always matted. To gain more width for the negative aspect ratio (when talking vertical 35mm at least) you'll either need to decrease the amount of perforations per frame (like Techniscope) or use an anamorphic lens (like Cinemascope). Super35 is (was) an effective way to get a negative aspect ratio that worked well for home video while being able to show the film in scope on the big screen. Major drawback was vastly decreased resolution compared to films shot in real anamorphosis.
