Has anyone ever ran across of heard of something called Melovision before? One of the guys in my local retro game group found this cartridge at a thrift store. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a video game or a movie. It seems to be close in a size to an Atari cartridge. May someone can read what the writing on the front is? Thanks in advance everyone.

This exact cartridge was actually discussed on Reddit just recently! https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthin ... e_village/

Apparently it's a subtitle cartridge for a certain type of LaserDisc player, from what they were able to dig up. That said, though, that's basically all the information about it that seems to be available, but I have a feeling someone here might have some more insight or know where to find it. This IS LaserDisc Database, after all.

As far as I have been told similar cartridges were used in Thailand to add Thai subs to some films.

However the Chinese writing ( traditional Chinese, Taiwan style ) means that it was produced for the Taiwanese market.

Even though some might think that Chinese is Chinese there are some differences. Subtitles for the HK video market, for instance, often use
some characters unique to the Cantonese dialect or foreign names are written with different characters which make more sense when pronounced
in Cantonese. That's why DVDs in East Asia often have subs for both Taiwan and HK.

So these seem to be a cartridge for subtitles, which is odd enough. What device does it plug in to?

I have an LIGITEK LG-925 CC Decoder. It has a port, that can be used to plug in Cartridges, maybe this machine would accept these cardridges? I can post a picture if you like. I always wondered how these cardridges would look like, since I only use it for the CC subtitles.

The Chinese characters read, in two lines : "Devil Emperor" / "True Lies". I can only assume that "Devil Emperor" is what they call Arnold in Taiwan.

is it too late to ask for a picture? I'm curious as to what it looks like.

Yes, this is the cartridge for Chinese (traditional) subtitle.
At the very early stage of LD playback in China, only titles with original soundtrack were available on the market. Then this subtitle machine was introduced which is somehow equivalent to a LD-G decoder.
When you buy a title you need to buy the LD and the accompanied cartridge as a set.
When you play a title back, it will need the machines to work together.

My pleasure. The more titles you have had the more subtitle cartridges you have in a stack.

I recently bought a couple of these 'subtitle decoders' - a "U-BEST UC-5100R" and a "Ligitek LG-505A" - and a selection of cartridges on eBay

Fun to play with for 5 minutes anyway.

What did intrigue me is that the decoder can retrieve a lot of information about the discs being played, which is evidently encoded on the video signal.

* Disc Type - CAV/CLV
* Elapsed time (CLV)
* Frame number (CAV)
* Disc side number (1,2 or X if not available).

I'd not realised before that this info. was available 'outside' the player...

The cartridges I have mostly have colour stickers with an image of the LaserDisc they're for on them. Some have the Pioneer-style 'LaserDisc' logo embossed in the plastic - I wonder if this was ever a product endorsed by Pioneer? Probably not.

Also wondering if the cartridges are 'hot-swappable' - but I'm not going to risk finding out :-)

fascinating. Some Vietnamese I knew in the '90s in Australia had the craziest gear and this is one thing they would have had that I had no clue what it was back then. It was mostly insane Vietnamese Karaoke setups in houses full of giant fishtanks with a half dozen Japanese import cars parked out front. They would have stacks of separates that were so crazy, mixes of Japanese gear and weird Chinese/Hong Kong stuff. Decoders and tone controllers, etc etc, I'm sure that sub cartridge thing was among some of their gear. A lot of Vietnamese speak Cantonese and read Chinese.
