Thought this might be of interest...

Zavvi have just posted information about upcoming Disney "Big Sleeve" releases which will feature Blu Rays and DVDs house in familiar looking 12" sleeves...I'm kinda tempted.

Here's the blog post about it:
http://www.zavvi.com/blog/features/what ... ium=social

I wonder how close they'll be to laserdisc packaging, they could be fun.

This sounds interesting! If they do show up, I'll definitely buy some.

There are some releases already that look similar to laserdisc packaging. Gundam: The Origin OVA blu-rays come in something that looks like a small box set, LD size.

Interesting, how are the discs stored in the sleeve? I imagine they'll be something like Lord Karnage's "Laser Hyper Vision" box set.

Oh, you got that one too! Same here. ;)

Perhaps they can have pockets that you slide the discs out of (and scratch them)?

Yeah, I just spotted the pockets on the inside right side of the gatefold, you can see them in the pics above. I missed them earlier. Not my favourite way of storing discs sadly.

You're not the only one. I'd probably copy the discs if it is something that is going to be handled frequently. Better to ruin some burned discs rather than the originals. :)

Either way, they're awesome looking gatefolds.

I always entertained the idea of duplicating my dvds and storing the burned ones in one of those 400 disc changers. I just don't like the GUI on them. 400 disc BD changer Sony has a good GUI (gracenotes when networked) but those are discountinued and used ones are super expensive.

Why bother with using DVD-Rs? I usually make a copy of all my Audio CDs, DVDs and Blu Rays to my local NAS
and play them using my computer or my custom fwed Pioneer Blu Ray player. I also make physical copies
of my Audio CDs as I think that my Toshiba HD DVD player has an excellent DAC.

400 BD = probably 10-20TB (let's say 3x 6TB drive $250/hdd) plus the media player or htpc. Cost wise similar but the CX7000ES has a nice GUI where browsing is fun. I don't know...difficult choice which way to go.

I ruled out Htpc last year. It's too expensive of you want to build something passively cooled. As for standalone media player, I haven't looked at all but I don't like the user interfaces so far. Kaleidoscape is nice but super expensive. Htpc with plex or similar is the best but not a cost I would like to pay.

I have a friend that rips all his BRs and manages them with some kind of jukebox thing. It just looked like a big PITA to me, personally. I've literally never ruined a disc in my life so I'm not about to waste media and time on making copies of stuff I already have.

BTW: I started a thread with a similar name when the Gundam Origin BRs came out.

The Return of LD! (Or rather, the closest we'll ever see)

(quick reminder: this topic is about oversized Disney DVD/BD releases coming soon, not about "my DAC is bigger than yours", to each his own!)

Techmoan just posted a video showing him unwrapping/opening two of 'em (and even starts the video with LaserDiscs):

I picked up Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy the other day. Sadly Guardians got damaged by the HMV security sticker so it'll be going back, but here's some pictures of the Star Wars set.

ImageImageImageImage

The cardboard isn't as solid as laserdisc packaging was, and I'm still not too sold on the front cover used for Star Wars (I'd have preferred the theatrical poster) but it does look pretty good in amongst my Star Wars laserdiscs.

Just saw the Techmoan video too and I think this is great! Sad to hear the cardstock is not as sturdy as original LD packaging. I assumed as much from his video. Would be nice to see these in North America.

They're not un sturdy, they'll last as long as you don't abuse them, the card just isn'tas sturdy as LD packaging. It's like modern LP packaging.

The new Gundam ones are way flimsier than old JP LDs were.

Yeah, but at least it isn't on the same level as many European LP and LD covers. Almost as thin as A4 paper those...

Japanese LD and LP sleeves always have the nicest cardboard but I've never noticed a difference between European and American sleeves on either LD or LP.

Some of them are really thin and flimsy. Seems the thin culprits are printed in (West) Germany for the most part.

Thank you hippiedalek for introducing those Zavvi Big Sleeve editions as I haven't heard of them before. Placed an order for both Star Wars and Guardians right away!
