The end of 3DTV has come. There is an article in my Sound & Vision for this month announcing the end of 3DTV. No major TV manufacturer makes 3D sets anymore. Chalk 3D to history. You can add it to CED, HD-DVD and Betamax as a failed video technology.

Tant pis. (Too bad.)

Thought this was kind of old news by now? Recall reading maybe a year ago or so that 3D were basically dead. Several of the big manufacturers announced they discontinued it.

I personally own a 3D TV, but I've only used the 3D function once. The glasses needed felt a bit heavy, so it would start to hurt after a while. At least not comfortable to use after a while.

Another funny thing with my TV is that when playing a VHS tape, the TV would from time to time display a "3D signal found, press button to activate" message. Guess the wonky signals VHS output for some reason triggered the 3D detection.

Hence my dilemma. LG E6 (2016 Oled) vs C7 (2017 Oled) vs Sony A1E (2017 Oled). 2017 models are slightly better but 2016 has 3D. I have a feeling the 2016 is going to held on its value better for the sake of the 3D lovers:) It's arguably the best/last 3D TV.

I cannot be held responsible whether this is old news or not. I do not follow 3D news and could actually care less about it. I just saw this news in my Sound and Vision magazine and thought that I would pass it on to this forum in case not everyone had heard. I always thought that 3DTV was just a brief fad and was for those that could afford it. My Bravia HDTV is adequate for me and I have no plans on replacing it. The fact that you have used the 3D feature only once does not justify buying the TV IMHO.

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk did get a 3D Blu-Ray release. Strangely, it was only included with the 4K package and not the standard Blu-Ray. The 3D in that flick actually looks really good, though I wish there was a way to show it in at least 60fps like the 4K disc.

I recently got a copy of Big Hero 6 on 4/25 that has 2 BD's. One is normal BR video and the other is 3D BR. So, they still are making 3D BD's. I cannot imagine that they will continue to make 3D BD's if the 3DTV sets are now out of production. It looks like 3D BD's are going the way of HD-DVD's.

I apologize if I sounded rude, that wasn't my intent! I'm sure someone still hasn't gotten the news.

I bought my TV back in 2014 I think it was. 3D was all the rage back then. Once you passed a certain point in price, you had no choice. I wanted a high end TV, and bought a Panasonic VT60 which were the best thing available. Personally I didn't like the idea with 3D, but since it were included I gave it a shot. Didn't want the Smart TV functions either, but it were included as well. Kind of wish I got a Pioneer KRP-500 when they were available....

Latest 3D title I bought on blu-ray were actually Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn. Still haven't watched it, but might give it a try with the 3D glasses.

I remember future-proofing my Blu-ray collection by buying 3D combo packs way back in 2010-2014ish. I didn't have a 3DTV then and I don't have one now.

And likely I won't have one anytime in the far future. LOL.

I checked my BD inventory. I have 8 DVD/BD combo packs. Movie number 9 is Big Hero 6 which is the only movie with a 3D BD and a 2D BD. So, Big Hero 6 is my first and maybe my last 3D movie.

It is nice to have the combo packs in case of a malfunction of your BD player. You can still play the DVD on your DVD player.

So much for my pearls of wisdom for today.

Yes there are plenty of 3D titles scheduled to be released in the next 6 months. Most disc players will support 3D discs but majority of the TV manufacturers dropped 3D from their 2017 line up. One reason for that is HDR on UHD titles. HDR requires as much brightness as you can get and filtering 3D panels reduce peak luminance. Another reason is 3D is not supported by UHD discs and that's where the future is.

I currently have 42 titles with 3D. I simply go on to realorfake3d.com to see if the movie I want was made in native 3D as most are converts from 2D. If it is native 3D, I get the 3D version.

I hadn't been following the news about 3D TVs so this is news to me.
I can't say I am shocked or disappointed.

Way back in late 2009 when I was buying my current LCD, there were no 3D TVs insight in any stores.
I was aware they were scheduled for release in early 2010 but this did not put me off buying a TV without it at the time.
Of all the extra features that have been added to TVs in recent years this is definitely one I would never have paid extra for. It seems the vast majority of the public thought likewise which is why they are being scrapped.

3D has been tried so many times before and failed to catch on that you'd think the manufacturers would have been more cautious about going down the same old road again.

At the movies I always felt like I was watching the equivalent of a cardboard pop-up book.

The last cardboard pop-up movie I watched I think it was Star Trek into Deafness! (twice) and never used the Dolby 3d glasses as it made all the whites tinted dark, it was like watching a dying xenon lamp.

I enjoyed 3D in the cinemas during the brief period when films were actually shot in 3D rather than converted to cardboard pop-up books later, but I never felt that 3D was a must have feature in the home.

The last 3D movie that I have seen was Spacehunter, Adventures in the Forbidden Zone. The movie was released in 1983 so I must have seen it in 1983 or 1984. It was released in 3D and yet I cannot remember wearing the 3D glasses in the theater. There were 3D effects like a gun being aimed at the audience; but, that was about all I remember. I have the movie on CED in normal 2D. (Strange, I cannot find a copyright date on the caddy. I had to go to the internet to get the release date.)

Good morning: Dumbchemist, Hippiedalek, Laserbite34, Audioboyz1973, Laserdisc_fan, Substance, Sega3dmm, Samaron, Nissling,
Xtempo, Forper & Laserpaal,

Enjoyed reading of your views on 3D Blu-Ray and can relate and agree on all that you have mentioned, however the following does apply and can be related to by others here.

When choosing to purchase the Blu-Ray Movies that I have liked over the last 6+ Years, I generally went for the Collectors Set with 3D + 2D Blu-Ray & DVD ect.....

Over the last Year or so I have now been purchasing the 4K / 3D 2D & DVD when offered....... It's a collector's thing & so wanted the options.

3D is subjective from one person to the next and so what I write here is purely a personal opinion;
Viewing a movie in 3D is all about choice and the pursuit of optional fun, as long as the job was done correctly and not as a second thought.

Director: James Cameron's vision with AVATAR and possibly with the four coming Sequels from 2020 to 2025 was to take the viewing public to the next level of immersive movie experience, and I for one appreciated that vision.

Up to this day my Pioneer KURO 60'' is without 3D and so I was unable to view such content, but when my Screen became faulty around 7+ Months ago and around 4+ months ago this became unwatchable / Unviewable.

I have been working hard towards the the Goal of purchasing a new replacement Screen, it was not my aim to go down the 3D route However the screen that I chose to purchase this Monday 15th of May has this feature.

It's the active 3D and comes with 2 pairs, and not the Passive version.
1) The Screen chosen is: SONY 4K ULTRA HDR KD75ZD9BU 75'' Retail price: £7000 price paid after negotiation: £6549.
2) Along with the screen I purchased a 4K Player: UBP X800 4K Blu-Ray 3D Retail price: £399 after negotiation: £299.
3) And lastly a SONY SoundBar: Sony HT-NT5 Slim High-Resolution Audio capable 2.1ch soundbar with S-Force PRO Front
Surround, and Bluetooth Retail price: £599 after negotiation: £499.

I must admit looking forward to Viewing all of my 3D Collection at some stage when it all arrives.
Arriving This Saturday: 20/05/2017 & removing my Old KURO, Sad to see this go to be honest.

The TV has enough 4 HDMI 2.2 version and plenty of legacy inputs for Laserdisc Composite / Scart and I shall be purchasing an analogue switcher box to HDMI to connect the rest of my old tech to this.

I hope that you are all well, and it will be interesting to see the results when all is up and running.

Kind Regards to everyone

Zd9 is a good display but after a Kuro your only option was a1. Given a1 at 77" is double the cost of zd9 but you could get the 65" version for less than what you paid for your zd9.
