i always did love that scene, -however poorly animated- in the late-90's AMG movie where Bell-chan dons a Japanese school Sailor Suit for the briefest moment when searching for some less conspicuous wardrobe out in public;





i've been wanting something similar for my 1/6 TAKARA/OBITSU hybrid doll for years, and finally got around to refitting an old TOKIMEKI MEMORIAL dolls' sailor suit into the closest thing i'll probably ever get to it;

((MAY, 2015 )) i just got around, -after putting it off for a while now- to picking myself up a secondary spare of this generally under-appreciated 1/6 doll of my favorite female Anime character, Mikuru Asahina of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" fame.

my first example of her, i got back around 2009 or so, paid around $140shipped for her. this one, i found from a U.S. seller for $75shipped.

believe it or not, this now copy seems to have a much better face, with smoother paint apps. her face looks pretty well dead-on to the mfr. photos that had instantly sold me on her back in 2009. i had always thought something looked off about my first copy, and i had, somewhat disapointedly,
attributed it to the usual differences prototype and production example.

well i am certainly elated to see that that was actually not the case, and that my Mikuru, pretty much exactly as i had initially seen her, actually exists as a mass-product, and that i now have one of my own...

i think i can finally pronounce this costume well and truly finished to my satisfaction,
now that i've just completely remade the Apron from scratch,
the original Apron once being the last remaining element carried over
from the original factory costume.

now, almost everything's handmade, save for the shoes,
-highly modified TAKARA "Jenny" Pink Pumps-
and the Cat Ear hairband
- hairband taken from MegaHouse MOON PHASE "Hazuki" also highly modified-
and i've finally well and truly made the "Sweet Lolita" Maid costume of my mind's eye
for my sweet, gentle Miss Asahina♥

this was my very first authentic Japanese-market Character Doll,
obtained back in 2008 from our fellow DS member "SetsunaKou"

after years of making custom fashions for her, i thought i'd return to her original costume
for a little while and attempt to bring it as close as i can to the redesign seen in the lovely-looking OVA treatment (Original Video Animation) of "Mamotte Shugogetten" which differs slightly from the styling seen in the original Manga and T.V. Anime.

major changes, besides addition of double-jointed elbows taken from a "To Heart" series TSUKUDA HOBBY body, were;


* new Pink "Beoseon" traditional Korean socks and very cute-looking, well-fitting slippers taken from an early release TH "Sakura Wars" Sakura Shinguji

* addition of full length Bloomers, less accurate to the source material,
but more accurate to the traditional Korean "Hanbok" fashion
Shao's costume is closely based upon

* new Earrings made from DIY jewelers' parts found at a craft shop, with green glass "E" Beads
to match her Hairband

* extension of her skirt hem, utilizing the same pearlescent-effect ribbon used on her Beoseon socks

You and my mother would have been great friends. About 60 years ago, my mother bought 50 6" tall nude dolls, one for each of the states in the USA. She then hand crocheted an outfit for each doll with the theme of the outfit based on the state. Examples would be the Statue of Liberty for the New York girl, a girl in a bikini for Hawaii, a girl in a parka for Alaska, a cowgirl outfit for the Texas girl, a girl in a pilgrim outfit for massachusetts, etc. I cannot remember why my mother did the project or what happened to the dolls. I guess I will never know.

You have to realize that she had to hand crochet the outfits using a very small stitch so as to give some coverage for the dolls. If someone could be a "crochet master", my mother would quality. I cannot remember how many baby outfits she crocheted for her siblings whenever a baby was born.

Anyway, your Shaorin is very pretty and is definitely something to be proud of.

thank you. i fell in love with the character somewhere around the mid-2000's, and was lucky that someone had listed this doll on the BAY in 2008 for $40.00 shipped,
and that i was pretty much the sole interested party in the auction.

she came as was, doll only, no box or accessories, and i've wanted to find myself a complete example of her ever since,
but i have yet, quite literally, to see another copy of her show up for sale anywhere in the western online hemisphere.

for all i know, she could be one-of-a-kind in the U.S. one thing i DO know is that she is unquestionably RARE outside Japan.
indeed, it is far easier for a westerner to obtain the late-1990's LD set of the Anime series she is from, than it is to come across this 1/5 scale TSUKUDA HOBBY character doll of her...

cosplaying as Lynn Minmay as seen in the climax of the 1984 Anime motion picture "MACROSS; Do You Remember Love?"

and TAKARA/HOBBY BASE MACROSS DYRL "Lynn Minmay" are combined;

Cool! It would be cool if Macross existed as a "show" in one of the Gundam universes..

thank you. perhaps someday i'll stumble across a set like that on the cheap, box or no box. sealed would be alright, i guess, so long as i wasn't paying a premium for it,
since i'd want the discs opened in any case.

someday the set for me will materialize. with any luck the series will still be as obscure/forgotten, keeping prices from shooting too far into the stratosphere...

Would you happen to know how many volumes there are in the manga? Amazon has volumes 1 to 5 only and I would like to know if that is all there are.

if it's the U.S. TOKYOPOP release, then, yes, Five (5) vols. only.

when TOKYOPOP began releasing this back in 2008, during the height of my Shugogetten fandom, i was ecstatic,
having my local BARNES&NOBLE special order each vol. for me as they were released.
coincidentally, it wasn't long after i acquired this doll, and it all sent me into a collectors' spree
that lasted a couple years or so, getting lucky along the way, fining a source for an HK BOOTLEG english-subbed (badly) DVD set of the T.V. series, same as what is on those LDs.

this series was from the late-90's, and there was a multi-part OVA re-telling of it's story in the early-2000's, unavailable in any english-subbed form, AFAIK.

i'd certainly love to own both series on LD or some region-lock-free physical format someday...

I like to read the manga before I view the anime (if one exists). I have 5 sets of manga in my collection:

Love Hina (English and French languages)
Chobits (English and French languages)
Yotsuba (English language)
Strawberry Marshmallow (English language)
Bunny Drop (English language)

With the exception of Yotsuba and Bunny Drop, I have the DVD anime's of the remaining 3.

Are the LD's of Shugogetten dubbed in English or are they subtitled? I checked E-bay and there are no copies for sale at least not yet.
