I was wondering what happens when a 4K player is playing a 4K disc; but, the HDTV can only display 1080 lines. Does the TV do a "downconversion" of the signal or does the player sense the limitation of the TV and automatically send 1080 to the TV instead of 4K? I have a 4K player; but, my HDTV can only do 1080 is why I ask this question.

(Inquiring minds want to know.)

During the handshake, the player gets to know what HDMI standard is accepted by the TV. If it's HDMI 1.4, it will only output up to 1080p. Thus 4K Blu-Rays will be downscaled to the selected resolution. In contrast to ordinary Blu-Rays, the difference can be very noticeable even on a 1080p display. Banding is pretty much gone and the chroma sampling is much better. Picture usually turns out a clear step sharper as well.
