Post subject: | Downconversion of 4K to 1080: Does it happen? |
I was wondering what happens when a 4K player is playing a 4K disc; but, the HDTV can only display 1080 lines. Does the TV do a "downconversion" of the signal or does the player sense the limitation of the TV and automatically send 1080 to the TV instead of 4K? I have a 4K player; but, my HDTV can only do 1080 is why I ask this question. (Inquiring minds want to know.) |

During the handshake, the player gets to know what HDMI standard is accepted by the TV. If it's HDMI 1.4, it will only output up to 1080p. Thus 4K Blu-Rays will be downscaled to the selected resolution. In contrast to ordinary Blu-Rays, the difference can be very noticeable even on a 1080p display. Banding is pretty much gone and the chroma sampling is much better. Picture usually turns out a clear step sharper as well. |
