problem is when you have not today your own bought well cared CRT in your home and need to find one at ebay....you need luck cause all of them have issues or are 60.000 hour running Pvm's with no brightness punch

Also recently did a research for a "Betacam SP" or "ED Beta" VCR, they are less reliable (forget betacam sp) and older than good VHS machines, they cost an eye and are broken, dont recomend them! ; the S-VHS with a high grade tape will match that quality easily dont worry...

I would only buy a CRT in person.

Last I checked you can still find like new or low hour silver Wegas and Trinitrons off the side of the road, currently I have 3 which are in great condition, I did have a 4th which I tossed because I thought the picture was weak. Also have a JVC I'art pro in nice condition.

Now when it comes to consumer sets vs pro monitors, maybe the monitors probably will far out of circulation first, and I do believe Sony put out about a zillion Wega sets between 2002-06.

Might be a big difference between the US and Europe in that regard and OP is in France. There are definitely loaaaads of Wegas around for cheap or free here. My main media tv for awhile was an XBR800 that I got for free*.

*Paid for with a hernia

There are 2 XBR800 WEGAs on Craigslist in Philadelphia for free (36" and 40")

If anyone's willing to get a hernia for some sweet CRT goodness!

I suppose in Europe it could be different, perhaps the crt purge is more complete there?

Wegas were much more prolific in USA ; I dont remember XBRs in Europe at all...
There are millions of FD Trinitrons in Europe between 21 and 32" but they are a step below the Wegas and XBRs...
....so the High end Crt's in Europe were the german Loewes ! and maybe some 36"Panasonic Quintrix.

I think XBRs are still better than Loewe

OP might appreciate this find.

Picked this stuff up off a cool old guy. He got it straight from the station when they got rid of it. It was a sattelite location of the KC CBS affiliate where they filmed local commercials.

Awesome stuff, particularly the console and the teeny PVM array in an 18” rack.

In the 2nd pic on the bottom there is a beast of a VCR, plays any tape format basically. NTSC, SECAM, 3 versions of PAL. We really hit it off chatting. The VCR, equalizers and audio mixer he was just like you want this stuff too? I figured might as well. I'm gonna have a lot of fun with this stuff. Unsurprisingly there are lots of beta tapes with commercials on them. Some sealed tape stock too.

It was basically a give it away type of price too, $100 for all.

He is an old war vet and really into audio and radio stuff mostly. He left a tape in the VCR that I need to get back to him because it's priceless to him and I'd feel awful if I didn't.

BetacamSP VTRs

I was so tempted to get one of those when one popped up on Craigslist for under US$100.

check the BetaSP decks functionality, if they work fine (not very reliable models) you have big money there

Look at this crazy info on the box of a brand new 2002 Panasonic VHS Vcr....."8.000 hours" head drum....really ? i calculate (more or less)
my Panasonic from 1992 has over 20.000 hours and still working like new with the same original components

I think it refers to life span of the drum...maybe some specialist can throw some light about this question
