I saw on YouTube that DCC (digital compact cassette) is making a comeback. The first new release in years by an artist recently came out. I’d like to check the format out. Any input out there ?

I think whomever this artist that you say is releasing their album was probably high on something and thus committing some form of fiscal suicide.

DCC has got to be the ultimate niche format with the installed base of machines being so minuscule that I have to wonder if the production run on this album is probably going to be under 50 units.

It’s a fact . Jeremy Heiden released his album Blue Wicked on DCC in July of 2017. It’s the first time in 20 years an album has been released on this format . Look into it. Cassette in general is making a comeback albeit not on a huge scale at this point.

Yeah, I first heard about this release on Techmoan's channel. Check this video (DCC talk starts around 7:44, talk about title in question is at 10:00):

Crazy thing is, that Blue Wicked album wasn't only released on DCC,

It was also released on Minidisc!

Indeed and the new MD blank cases are so rare he is selling 4 versions with cases in different conditions:
MiniCase cd style jewel case $12
Heavy Scuffed case $25
Lightly Scuffed case $40
Collector Grade case $95

As you can see the blank cases are now worth many times the price of the discs.
I stocked up on blank cases about 3 years ago while there were still supplies readily available.

I guess I stand corrected.

Still not sure the point of it is unless it's just a interesting attempt at nostalgia. With that said, I might considering buying a new release LD if the price was right and the title offered was unique in some way vs a DVD or Blu-Ray release.

I've never heard of DCC but I've also been away from any tape format since 1998, I believe that was around the last time I even handled a tape of any kind.

Picked up a Hi-8 camcorder to use as it was cheaper than the DVD 3 inch camcorders at the time and had it for a very short time then sold it on ebay after I was done.

Ah the good ole days when one could use something sell it and make a nice little profit

Cassette is on the rise again and this artist was trying to be a part of that . I just heard my first DCC the other day. I was impressed .

The idea behind DCC was the deck could maintain backwards compatibility for compact cassette.

So unlike DAT which used helical scanning heads like VCR's so pack the information on the tape iirc DCC used multiple linear tracks with the stationary heads to achieve a decent bit-rate. I recall hearing at the time that some people were having problems where compact cassette playback (probably of somewhat dubious quality/condition) was dirtying the heads fairly quickly and then causing issues with DCC playback.

Found this ad for DCC in an old issue of Video Magazine. Figured you all might be interested in it if you are interested in DCC.

I've always liked the look of the home decks. The portables remind me of discmans

I won't consider it to have made a true comeback until they release a brand new deck with dolby noise reduction and full support for Type II and IV tapes.
