Hello.

I have a French SECAM VHS tape that I would like to get professionally transferred to digital format. I would do it myself as I have a good SONY Professional VCR and capture equipment, however the VCR only does PAL and NTSC formats. It will play SECAM but only in black and white, which is obviously no use to me.

I don't want to buy more hardware so would rather just get someone to do it for me, however the film is really rare and I want it captured properly and the cassette treated with the respect it deserves.

Can anyone recommend a good service I could use for a SECAM to Digital transfer? I'm happy with a global service too, I don't care so long as whoever is doing it is good and looks after my cassette.

Thank you!

Speed Driver. A cool as ice racing movie from 1980 starring Fabio Testi and directed by Stelvio Massi.

It has quite a history behind it. I recently purchased an original 1980 cinema lobby poster for the film. It was actually sourced from the Museum of Cinema in Syracuse in Palermo, Italy! Sadly the cinema shut down last year (as far as I am aware) and the poster was salvaged and I managed to buy it.

Such a cool film with fun real racing footage spliced in to it. I love 70's and 80's Italian cinema (even though this was an Italian, French, German and Spanish co-production!). :D

Here's the poster (not my photo, mine is not in as good shape) to give you a taste of it:

Sadly not. The VHS I have does not even have English audio or subtitles. There is a pirate DVD copy floating around you can buy online, that one has English audio and hard burned-in Greek subtitles. Not worth your time or money, though I may get one to demux the English audio and add it as a separate track to whatever digital copy of my SECAM tape I can get made.

To the best of my knowledge there is no Laserdisc release either. I was hoping Japan would help me as you can usually get rare films on LD there, but nothing so far. I even contacted the company that co-produced it and has a museum in Germany. They emailed me back earlier this year with very little information though if you live in Germany and can visit them you may get more information in person. They have the original film negatives in storage there.

Lots of other VHS releases were made though. I've seen tapes from Brasil, Finland, Germany and France. Oddly, for a film co-produced with Spain (Lotus Films, Madrid) I have yet to see a Spanish release surface.

This thread must be a good luck charm as this just appeared on eBay. I managed to get a deal on it so it's now mine!

Never even knew a Japanese print existed of this film. There is absolutely no mention of it anywhere!

¥30,000 :o

Thank you for the information, that is very interesting to see what it looks like. Useful to know it's in Italian with Japanese subtitles. Guess I will still need the Greek VHS audio!

If a Laserdisc exists it must be very rare, if one exists at all. Still, I hope I can get my SECAM tape digitized. The Japanese one I will convert myself and upscale it to 1080p with my Framemeister.

One other thing I noticed, the Japanese print is longer than the European version, it runs for 106 minutes compared to 84 minutes for the (West) Germany print. The version from Brasil runs at 108 minutes, though may only be 2 minutes longer due to reel lengths/frame rate etc. I would love to get a Brazilian copy of the film to be able to compare them!
