Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but this does seem like a miscellaneous question, which has probably too much background.

I'm planning out a project right now that involves a fictional late-80s anime OVA, and I'd like to make some fake photos of this fake anime, including a fake Laserdisc jacket (and possibly a fake VHS tape?). My two questions for you guys are these:
  • According to my only source (Kenny Lauderdale on YouTube), LD was pretty popular in Japan, and a strong competitor to VHS. Is that true?
  • If that is true, and if I were to get a 12-inch or 10-inch vinyl record with a sleeve, do you think it's possible I could fake the outside of it well enough for it to pass as LD? My experience is they're about the same size, and as long as the vinyl doesn't show it should be fine. I think.

I am not sure I can pull it off with photo manipulation; plus it sounds kind of fun to try to do physically: pasting a cover carefully on a mostly-white album cover, using filters to make the image believably grainy, etc. I just don't know whether it's worth it to try if the size of the album itself will be a dead giveaway.

Any help is much appreciated; thank you!

Hello!

You could easily use a LP record cover (or make your own) and put any Laserdisc inside but...

Why not simply buy a LaserDisc and make a custom cover?

Yes. LD was way more popular than VHS for anime between about 1986 to 1997 when DVD slowly started to take over. VHS was usually priced %50 higher for rental reasons. It was rarely even advertised by 1992 or so. The definitive version of almost every classic OVA is the Laserdisc. Most people have never even seen the VHS versions unless they rented them or got them off YaJ years later.

As has been said, full sized LD jackets are identical to full sized records. The small LDs are 8” though and the smaller records are 7” or 10” so I’d suggest stick with 12”. Since it’s a actual square it should be easy to design the cover in 2D at full size and then wrap it it around a 12”x12” piece of cardboard. If you include an obi and get it in plastic it will be very authentic. A full packaged LD weighs 1/2 a pound.

I'm pretty sure I know where I can get a cheap, used LP from a physical store, which means no waiting for the mail to come. Even though I'm in a big city I'm not sure I could say the same for a laserdisc :P

Also, my impression was that LDs were kind of expensive, but after seeing some of the prices on the main site I'm almost tempted to order one, even though I have no way of playing it.

Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for confirming. Also, is YaJ "Yahoo Japan"? I googled it and that's what came up

Yes YaJ is yahoo Japan.

Don't understand why you are calling it a fake, its more of fan made.

Don't understand why you are not going to do the graphics clear but blurry, they should be clear.

Good luck with your fan made project.

I think maybe the idea is to ‘shop the fake cover into a period photo, perhaps.
