I've been in a lot of scenes over the years. I have way too many hobbies. One thing I've noticed in almost every scene is that, sooner or later, dudes flake. Its happened to some really high profile and reputable people, and now it has happened to one of the best guys out there. I have seen nearly this same thread on a dozen forums. Its always sad.

What happens? Life interferes. Death interferes. Time runs out, money runs out, patience runs out. I'm sure its a lot of things, but I'm beginning to think it can happen to anyone. Sure, you may think you'd never leave Rein-O hanging, I don't think I would either, but then I'm also not Duncan. I don't have a sick wife. I'm not supporting a dead scene with my own non-profitable fan-dependant business. I can barely repair the simple issues with LD players. I don't do what he does. While I can't defend his lack of communication with people who he owes gear and money, I do know the feeling of not wanting to check my email because doing so would just be an exercise in anxiety. In hard times I've left bills unopened because I didn't have the money to pay them.

I don't know his situation, and I'm sure many people here know a lot more about him than I do. We have a problem here for sure, but this should be a thread where we are trying to solve the problem, not just be a thread where we s**t on the guy and speculate as to where he's ebay-ed the stuff. This is why I said what I did to a guy with only five posts who's calling him a cheat and speculating that he's sold people's players. Leaving aside the ridiculousness of this statement (come on, if he felt like shipping LD players he'd ship YOURS, genius) he just hasn't earned it. He has five (now 6) posts, all of which are in this very thread...He's not a regular. He has no cred. We don't know him, at least not here and under that name.

When the people with a thousand posts rag on me for hating collectors, that's valid. They've probably seen me dump on the eBay-spawned LD Big Tymers a million times and are just sick of the broken record. However, when some noob who didn't even know what LD was 5 years ago tells me I must hate LD because I hate collectors, that guy can take a running jump. Duncan has been repairing LD players since I was 5! I'm 41 now! So he went off track when he got old, lots of people do. He's just being lazy and depressed and possibly broke, not malicious or opportunistic or malevolent. I believe that distinction is important.

i'm just trying to see what is going on, not to slam him.
I was in contact with him before I started this topic, but when it came to the repair/what's going on with other people questions he just clammed up
tighter a frogs you know what in water.

I know some of the issues, heard pretty much all from everybody else, I know he isn't selling the players on ebay but just want to get it out there.
if there are issues keep us posted, try not to take 2 years even if it is serious but still get our players back some day.

DO NOT SEND DUNCAN/LDSERVICE ANYTHING FOR REPAIR.
you get NO contacts and NO items back and charged top dollar for repairs and have to wait YEARS

I guess some lucky person will get our players at his estate sale

and it shows the real credibility of this criminal who won't message or get our property back to us that we sent him in good faith.

rein-o - yep, you'll be on the 'bad' list permanently now for bringing it to everyone's attention so will presumably be last to get a reply. You can see the dilemma for people like erwing who are newbies to the forum and got mocked by some cronies while LDService still gets the red carpet treatment as though he is some sort of god like figure. I think those people need a reality check. There appears to be 3+ years backlog of players he hasn't fixed nor responded to. I bet no one who sent him a player expected those sorts of delays. Whilst I've never personally dealt with the guy (nor do I ever intend to) I do know several others who have and their experience was identical with massive delays in getting repairs done (typically 1.5-2 yrs best case) and lame excuses (if he replied at all) should you dare to ask politely what was going on.

I think at this stage I'd sooner buy a player from that dodgy guy called cararte from Portugal than send one to LDService for repair! For anyone who doesn't know the story about cararte......read this Regular non-paying buyer 'cararte'

yes, but at least nobody else will be on this list as I hope they search Duncan or laserdisc service and find this topic helpful.

and there are a lot of friends and family that I have lost in the past who would gladly take Duncan's troubles over the ones that they have..........

I really find it amazing that almost NOBODY has posted saying they were not done wrong by good ole Duncan / laserdisc service.
seems like nobody got a fair shake, or if they did it was 10 years ago, but I've recently heard stories about how
hes left people high and dry back then too.

just coming out of the woodwork now, we all know he's done for in the repairs, anybody who does a search will find this topic
and realize to NOT send him any players, unless you are local and can drop of/pickup.

There was recently a situation like this in Sweden where a guy who repairs and modifies retro consoles more or less disappeared from the forum. He still signed in now and then but never replied to messages and didn't write anything to anyone. He have had an Nes of mine for nearly three months and earlier this week I was so upset with having to wait and not getting any reply to any of my messages so I told him that if I didn't get an answer within a week I'd report him to the police. Only a day after he made it very clear that he had been at a mental hospital for several weeks due to burnout (his father got two strokes last summer and he have had way too much work to do this autumn) but apparently was starting to get back on track again. This was a big relief for me and I now have faith in the guy again.

Could something like this have happened to Duncan as well? I can fully understand the frustration of you guys but I'm kind of worried that something have happened to him like the guy I just told you about.

FWIW, dark_jedi on originaltrilogy.com sent in his Pioneer CLD-79 last year and got it back in a reasonable amount of time.

There is a chance, a very small one, that he is working every hour he can to fix all these players by Christmas and I mean Christmas 2014 not next year!! Maybe Erwing and Rein-o will get the best Christmas present they could ever wish for.....stranger things have happened.

One things for sure he is certainly keep us all guessing what is going on currently.

Up until the last player I sent, which I'm hoping I'll still be able to get back, I've had nothing but good prompt service from Duncan. Turnaround time was on the order of weeks, not months to years, that's why this is surprising to me.
