Hello

I'm experiencing lip sync issues with my ac-3 laserdiscs.
I have a dvl-909, sony led tv and use a crystalio vps + harman kardon adp 303 with audio out 5.1 to a nad receiver.

It's only the ac-3 track, it's not huge but it's def. noticeable, my wife who really doesn't care much about home cinema :) also notices it. So analog or digital tracks are spot on.
It's more on some tracks then on others I think, for example in the beginning of Se7en Criterion ed. Could be my imagination though that it differs across titles...

What I've done:
Removed the crystalio, same issue.
Used the harman kardon audio delay feature, only makes it worse
Removed all video processing on my sony led, makes it somewhat better

I suspect the issue is simply the harman kardon analogue out to the nad, the nad wont let you do any dsp (audio processing) with analog inputs..
But as I don't have any ac-3 demodulators with digital out I cant test that.

anyone recognize this issue?

thnx //D

If increasing the delay on the 303 makes things *worse*...that doesn't make sense to me.

Other than that I would say your stuff is all too modern. There's too much delay in the display chain and your receiver can't do what receivers used to be able to do to make up for it. Normally increasing delay on the 303 would fix this though. It it makes it *worse* then...I don't get at. And if it changes depending on titles...that's not something I can invent an explanation for.

Which is lagging, the audio or the video?

There is an issue with AC-3 sync.
I believe disclord posted???? but i do remember reading once that all the AC-3 was done manually and some discs like The Fly had issues with the first pressings.
Later pressings were fixed.

So this could be a hardware issue and or it could also be the transfer issue like posted above.

Good luck.

Maybe the delay adjustment pot in the 303 is bad?

the video is lagging
also the delay on the 303 only goes up to 15ms, could be way too small. for example if it wasn't analogue in I could calibrate my NAD up to 100+ ms delay.

Something could be broken/not perfect with the 303, I know it had been kept in storage for a really long time before I got it.

Makes it worse or different across titles is just probably me not seeing any difference. eg. not getting better - I guess I just have to get a hold of another ac-3 demodulator to see if the issue goes away..

thnx :) //D

The 303 can be hacked to provide SPDIF. There is a thread about it here someplace.

I think the issue is just that your display has a pile of lag in it and your receiver treats analog as an afterthought. Nobody was digitizing the signal five times before it hit the screen back when the 303 came out so most people never touched the lag adjustment. I assume you have the same issue with commentary tracks, VHS, or anything else with analog sound.
