Is it ok (and beneficial) to use a cd/DVD cleaner (the sort with little brushes that you put a drop of alcohol on) in my Pioneer cld-d925 laserdisc player?

That should be just fine for LD and I've used one before with no problems. All you are doing is just brushing any dust/debris off the lens.

I don't even use alcohol (I don't like using it on coated plastics) and had good results on all types of laser.

There is never a reason to clean the lens on an LD player unless you are in a house where people smoke or it was left out sitting without playing where dust could settle on it. When an LD spins it creates a lot of air movement and that keeps it clean.

If you need to clean use the purest alcohol you can fine and a chamois swab. clean gently.

VCR's definitely needed professional cleaning due to their designs but CD, DVD, LD, Blu-Ray generally never need cleaning.

Thanks :) I won't clean it then, I used to smoke but that was before I bought a laserdisc player and the original owner didn't smoke either :D

I was asking because the cleaner did sort out my DVD recorder which was reading but not writing discs... That was around when I used to smoke tho

DVD and CD players actually don't create all the air movement that a LD creates so LD does a better job keeping the lens clean. Of course smoke does settle as a film, not dust and that is why players in a smokers house may need cleaning.

I had to clean the lens on the player which had a half-vaporized roach inside. Cleaned a lot of other parts in there, too.

I have an Audio Technica LD lens cleaner I picked up on Japan some years ago. Doesn't really work anymore though, as it gets stuck on the cleaning chapters for some reason.

Sent a message to Josh on his "Laserdisc Forever" website, and he said the same thing that Kurtis says.

Now it's just another one of my LD novelties that I keep around for no real reason.

The LD lens has a plastic protective ring around it so the actual lens cannot bump the lens when focusing.
So unless the disc has bristles then it will never touch the lens, let alone if has to be reflective or the LD won't spin.

In another words these cleans will not work on a LD player.

The LD Lens cleaner I have has bristles.

One of the bristles is colored so you know where to put a drop of the cleaning solution.

I have this Japan made one. It's a full 12" size laserdisc and has 2 sets of brushes. Doesn't use fluid though.

I can recommend this disc cleaner for any player that plays DVDs. Totally bristlesless it just creates a wind tunnel. Too bad it can't clean CD lenses. But this won't actually clean the LD/CD lens on an LD player, as they use two different lenses for the LD/CD operation, and the DVD operation.

So it makes no sense to use a normal CD Audio lens cleaner ?
Its strange, but some TV repair men told me, that its not necessary to use a special LD cleaner, some told me it is even dangerous, or they told me I should buy one.

What now ?

Don't use any CD cleaner or anything like that, these are not record players and since they have no contact you don't need to clean on any
regular basis.

While they do get dirty you can clean one but never with any disc cleaners.
Use something very mild, even alcohol can remove a special film on some lasers.
Do some google and search it up.
Cleaning wrong can mess up your laser and you will be out the entire player.

The laser lens has a plastic ring to prevent the actual lens from touching the disc surface so a cleaning disc would only polish the plastic protective ring.

LD's spin at a few thousand RPM and create plenty of wind to keep the laser lens clean. Otherwise it you really want to clean open the unit and take rein-o's advise

Thanks but you do know more than me with repairs, I just hate to see people ruin their players for nothing.

I have never had improved results from cleaning the lens on a Laserdisc player.

I don’t know why you would want to spin bristles over a lens at a few thousand RPM. These cleaners are gimmicks. Take off the top and clean it properly.

I've brought a couple of players back to life by cleaning the lens. One would only recognise a disc intermittently and the other wouldn't recognise CAV discs. As a rule if the player plays fine don't bother cleaning the lens, but if you need to follow the good advice on the forum.
