This player, I have to say, is not designed to be friendly to the service tech.

Like most Sony players, it requires a special jig to bring out certain test points in order to perform adjustments. Happily, I found the schematic for the jig in the manual for another model, because there aren't any available.
Considerably worse than that, for certain adjustments it calls for a 20 cm MUSE test disc, and the adjustment has to be made by sticking a screwdriver through a hole in the disc tray, so a 30 cm disc won't work. This poses an obvious problem, because where one might find this test disc is an open question, & there were no commercially-released 20 cm MUSE LDs. I have an inkling that it might work with an NTSC disc, if (as I would expect) the MUSE adjustments are "primary" & the NTSC adjustments "secondary".

More than that, though, it's just really awkward to work on. I was replacing the loading belt on one today, and it took a ludicrous amount of effort to make sure the tray was properly synchronized.

Pioneer Reference Disc [LDT-213]

This is the 8" MUSE Reference LD from Pioneer.
Did SONY have its own, or would this work?
It was crazy expensive, and I am not sure if it is still available.

I'm fairly sure any 20 cm MUSE disc would work OK, certainly if it was CAV. But, of course, 20 cm consumer discs don't exist!

A couple of tips.
If you hold down the front panel STOP button, while pressing in sequence 0 then STOP on the remote control :
(a) if the player is ON, it will go into DEBUG mode, & you can read the contents of the memory registers. This can help, for instance, find out what errors the system is experiencing.
(b) if the player is OFF, and you then push POWER on the remote control while still holding down front-panel STOP, it goes into TEST mode. At this point you can trigger various functions individually, so you can check motor, servo, laser, &c operation separately.

In TEST mode, you can turn the spindle motor on without a disc in place, but it will not turn on if the loading/chucking procedure is not completely closed.

(Now, I have to figure out why the focus servo would not be working even when the laser lights OK.)

Wow.
The focus servo seems to be where it's at with this player.
Today, while I was using it, my one working unit failed.
Over the course of a couple of hours, first it played a double-sided disc with no problems ; then it would play side A but the flip operation failed ; and then it gave up playing entirely. A check of the Debug Mode told me that it was not achieving focus lock.

I now have three units with essentially the identical problem! Here's hoping that, if I can sort one out, all three will submit to the same treatment.

No Pioneer LD players that I ever owned have failed, save for blown fuses that were easily replaced.

Neither have the Panasonics that I owned

In this case we're talking Hi-Vision players so Panasonic = Sony clone.

Of course Pioneer players fail, Lamborghinis do sometimes too! The point is that even after about 25 years around 90% or more of X9's and X0's for sale are working units, whereas more like 98.95% of Sony/Panasonics are advertised as junk on YJP. Do you really need more evidence??

Not to detract from the original post - I hope Publius can get on top of this and maybe then a lot more Sony/Panasonic Hi-Vision Players could be back in service. These days the more working players (regardless of brand) the better!!

Yeah but hundreds of thousands more X9s and X0s were actually made.

It's like saying a 1971 Shelby Cobra is a crap car coz so few are available but all the working 1971 Ford F100 pickups make the Ford F100 a better car? Huh?

But I was taking in terms of percentages; perhaps some mathematics revision is required?

I have the impression that the HIL-C1 & HIL-C2EX were manufactured in quite large numbers, although for a shorter time than the HLD-X9. Not that I can prove it.
I actually quite like these players, but they seem to have a couple of distinctive design flaws which lead to the same trouble recurring in every unit. On the other hand, if it's a common problem with a common solution, then perhaps I can find a way to fix them which will allow me to return large numbers of them to service.

Please do keep all posted if you are able to fix these.
I was interested in getting one of these in the past when I did find out they were actually Panasonics, but at the time years ago Duncan said he was working on one
but was still working on it as it had some issues.

Lets hope we can keep these players back up and running.

Yeah good luck Publius. I have planned for a few years on buying a C1 or C2EX when the time is right. Any wisdom that's gained from your research and experiments will be of benefit to all Sony fans.

I have a Panasonic LX-HD20 here. Unfortunately it won't play any disc. It is not even spinning up. I can open and close the tray and it will recognize wether a disc is inserted or not. However it will never spin up.

I tried to enter the DEBUG / TEST mode but the key combination won't work. It seems it is not a 100% clone of the Sony. I don't have te original remote so I tried a universal one (IM-1313) and all Sony codes failed but one Panasonic did work. So I can operate the player with the remote but the codes to enter Test mode seem different.

Any tips on what the issue might be or does anyone know how to enter the TEST mode on the Panasonic?

Edit: Switching to side B also does not work. The mechanism seems to hang a some point.

Only thing I can think of would be to clean the laser.
But don't use any alcohol or anything that would or could remove a possible coating on the laser.

Some lasers do have a coating and should never be removed or you will damage the laser and never play discs again.

I just bought one for $10 which says -

"The power supply entered. Operation confirmation will be easy for a short time, so it does not guarantee complete operation."

I found this page which gives some info, have you seen this? - http://www1.synapse.ne.jp/takata/av/pan ... index.html

This was exactly what was happening with the one I just bought and turns out the laser was dead, you can still buy NOS lasers for around $200 and it's a fairly easy swap if you follow the service manual. Also it responds to a standard Panasonic LD remote which can put it into test mode. The flip to side b will hang if the ribbon cable is routed wrong, might be your issue??
