Does anyone know of a way to modify the CLD-959 (Japanese CLD-97) to disable Noise Reduction?

The NR button found on the 97 has been re-purposed for the 959 and so there is no way of turning it off. I've read the guide available in the LDDB manuals section on how to modify a 97 to default the NR off but was wondering how you would modify the 959 to do the same?

I know that if you put the front panel of a 97 on a 959 the NR button works so I'd assume the process is the same but cannot say for sure.

If the relevant areas on the schematics for the main boards are substantially the same, then there should be no difference in the modification.

The circuit board and mod points are the same. The only difference is the button on the front which is labeled PSC so I'm wondering if this mod for the 97 will then enable this PSC button to perform a DNR toggle. If replacing the front panel with a 97 enables DNR on/off then performing the mod should, in the worst case, just permanently turn DNR off. I would like to have the option to turn it off and on though if possible.

If the button is being used for picture-stop cancel, then I don't see any way that the noise-reduction modification would somehow change its function to toggle noise reduction instead. That would be a different change, either to the front-panel circuit board, or to the microcontroller.

I've just found an old post from Kurtis who managed to modify the PSC button to function as DNR. If he sees this post maybe he can shed some light on how he did it.

You can either mod the video board to permanently turn it off or you have to remove the front panel and cut some traces and hard wire the 97 connections to the button.

Thanks Kurtis. Good to know it's possible. I'll check the service manual for 97 front panel. Not sure why pioneer decided to remove this function from 959

Ha! That’s awesome! A proper Frankenstein machine. I don’t suppose you have a spare 97 front panel kicking around?

No, it was weird that front panel popped up on eBay for $25.00 right when I needed one....

Nice. Found the 959 service manual online but not sure I want to drop $19 on it just to see the routing of the PSC button. Should get by with the 97

I get the 959 today, and I am interrested in doing the same thing : desactivating the DNR.
Maybe it should be possible with some remote control ? I don't want to hurt my player...

Unfortunately this requires a hardware modification and is not possible from a remote. Even on the 97 NR has to be turned off from a button on the front panel as the remote didn't include this function. When I get around to modding mine I can let you know the procedure if successful
