Hi all,

I'm new to the forum but have been a reader for some time now.

Anyway I need some help guys, I have a Pioneer CLD 2950, it's a great player (I have used it for a few years) and has never given me problems. But a few days ago out of no where it started to give me an awful picture with horizontal static / noise lines. (see picture attached) I have plugged it onto few other TVs, changed the cables (analog and S-video) and even changed the movies and I still get the same result.

and the other day I bought another LD player (CLD D550) and no problem at all (so its not the TV, movies or the cables).

The other thing I noticed is as the movie plays for a while for 30mins to an hour the picture does get a bit better with less satic lines but they are still there and when the movie flips side it begins again with the static horizontal lines.

Any idea guys on how I can fix it, its a great player and I don't want to loose it.

thanks appreciate the help.

I’m afraid I can’t tell much from the picture. The first two are high contrast almost totally black and white photos so I can’t see anything but a Star Blowerupper and a logo. The bottom one shows more color noise than anything else.

My hunch is that your having alignment issues and if this player used a plastic M-Holder my hunch is that one of its axles is broke (it’s a tiny little “gearbox case” that holds two gears in place. When one “axle” breaks the gears stay in place but the mech droops or the gears snag as they move causing skipping and herringbone patterns, worse on side B) This model may be based on the earlier turn mech though which I’ve ever repaired so if that’s the case ignore me. :)

Someone who knows more will chime in, in the meanwhile it would be helpful to have better pics. I’m not sure what kind of scene to use because I can’t really see the noise here.

2950 is mechanically based on 503/70x, but with PAL/NTSC support and analog TBC.

My first guess is the laser output is dying off. If it takes a long time to stop and/or switch sides the grip ring might be failing.

OK I want to say its some type of chroma video noise, I have noticed this type of stuff on cartoon or anime when they are older discs.

It could also be some dirt on the disc OR its a flaw in the production that is causing it. Or its a weak laser as happy posted.
Many issues, does it only happen on star wars or do you have any other discs to test.

archtk,

Is the digital audio playing OK or are you experiencing distortion/dropouts? Also do you use this player regularly or has it been idle for an extended period of time (ie for the occasional Star Wars session)?

Oh yeah, I didn’t even notice this was a Star Wars post. :) Oh well, I guess it’s nice to be remembered for SOMETHING.

Well, I wanted to ask if this had to do with copying the LD to bluray but didn't.

hi guys,

thanks for all the fast replies, well I don't think the problem is disc or TV related as it happens on all the discs I try, (I have a collection over 100 discs) and I have tried the same discs on my other laserdisc player on the same tv using the same S-video and component inputs and they play fine.

- Sound is fine (Optical and Analog outputs) no skipping on audio or video.
- Video does not skip or stop
- When the disc has stopped (blue screen) image is fine no static (static appears only when playing the movie)
- After playing the movie for a while 1hour or 2 images improves slightly less static
- I have tired both outputs S-video and Component
- Static video appears on both sides of the disc (Side A& B on the auto flip on PLayer)

I will upload a few more pictures and a zoom to see if you guys can see the static image

Also one last thing, the player sometimes ejects the disc automatically when inserted, sometime it takes 2-3 attempts and I need to press play quickly to get the disc to read and start playing (not sure if its related) but this has been happening about 1 year or 2 before the static image started appearing. As mentioned before it only happened suddenly about 2 weeks ago.

That looks like crosstalk... usually when a player has this sort of trouble the audio goes wonky as well.
