Post subject:  HDTV woes?

So, now that I have my D925 up and working - I have a viewing-related question.

In my office, where I currently have the LD player setup, I only have room for my old LCD (with backlight, not LED) TV. It's a 28" Sharp Aquos - HD Ready (720).

It's not the best picture but it's certainly good enough to test out the payer's functions and watch movies when I get a new LD home (which has been quite regularly since I managed to fix the player...). It has no issues other than being approx. a year 2000 vintage TV.

This weekend, my wife was away and I wanted to see how much better(?!) our main TV would be for LD's. This is a Samsung 32" LED - not new by any stretch (2011 I think) as we're moving house in a few months' time and I will buy new to fit the size of the living room. It's HD 1080P and has always shown a good picture for cable/DVD/BLU Ray. So I was expecting a difference for the LD setup (certainly better colours than my Sharp...).

BUT - and here's the thing - I couldn't watch any movie long enough to compare the two as the Samsung was so 'choppy' whilst playing LD's! The top 1/4 to 1/3 of the screen, even on a slow camera-pan, jerked like buggery!! :( Action sequences almost gave me a headache!

Both TV's have been hooked up to the player via SCART lead and I was told the 925 was quite a high-end UK (OK, not ELITE or anything..) LD player, so I presume the issue isn't there.

So what am I missing? Why is the better TV so jerky to watch compared to my older cheaper one?

TIA

You are trying to drive a Ford model T on the Autobahn, why won't it go faster??? The road is amazing and built for speed.

You need to adjust your TV in ways that you could never imagine for the LD to look decent, I've never had the 925 but its a dinosaur compared to
what you are playing it on, even if your set is 2011.

Try turning all enhancements down or completely off, sharpness low or off, if you have a setting from 0-100 put it around 10 or 15 and see what happens.

As for the choppy I've had this before but with a poorly remastered DVD, you will again need to go into settings and try turning things off to see
what will change, there could be something that sounds great and that you should leave on but make sure to turn it off.

Thanks.

Although, I have to admit to not actually following that argument...

I have 2 TV's, both based on LCD screens and essentially the same technology apart from the backlight being LED in the newer one. Both have comb filters, movement compensation and various other settings which, for this test, I have left alone as they are used daily.

The (C)2000 machine shows no issues playing LD's whereas the newer (C)2011, more expensive model, struggles - badly.

I'm really not sure I follow... Am I missing something?

No. That’s now new stuff is.

The Sony I’m bragging about in other threads has severe jitter when showing the built in character generator over the built in blue screen. The actual LD signal looks perfect. That’s life.

The fundemental display technology (LCD, LED, Plasma, whatever) is irrelevant. What matters is how the TV handles the signal before it hands it off to the rest of itself. There’s no way I know of to know if a TV is going work great with LD or work like total crap. It’s not something makers care enough about to advertise on the box or brag about. You just have to get lucky (tip: you’re a lot more likely to get lucky with something from a real company like Sony or Panasonic or Pioneer (RIP) than some cut rate highest inch-per-dollar crap from the budget brands but even this is not certain).
