Whenever I play a disc it will hit an area and basically keep looping, but pausing and resuming or fast forwarding seems to make it continue but then it'll randomly do it again later. It did not do it in the same areas on a 2nd viewing and it did it on both sides of the disc.

I don't know much about the insides or parts of an LD player so explanations of where things are etc would be useful. I have a fully functional CLD-59 for parts that I could use if they are compatible as well.

Thanks

Sounds like might be alignment issues, maybe tracking servo or another servo.

I wouldn't be taking parts off a fully functioning player, that just makes another broken player.

Any way you could explain to me how to troubleshoot these options or direct me somewhere I could read up on it

I'll buy it broken.
Don't part it out.

Not sure which player you are referring to, but I'd like to keep both.
Outside of the inconvenience of having to skip past looping parts the R7G works like a charm and I'd really like to solve this issue if possible.

The one that you have listed in the subject.
R7G.

I used to have one and before you start tweeking stuff, I would rather buy it before you make anything worse.

Most likely a dead spot in the laser movement motor, I'd try replacing the motor.

I got through the same disc without a single loop this time. So I guess it doesn't happen all the time so I think I'll leave it alone for now.

You may just have a little piece of grit on one of the gears. It may have fallen off. I have seen this too.

That may very well be it. Another problem I have is (with all 3 of my players) that I seem to be getting a checkerboard effect over S-Video out which I assume just means the cable is bad?

Try the composite output. If that looks better use it. Many monitors and processors handle composite better than S-Video. Remember LD is recorded in the composite format so the question is does the player or the monitor/processor do a better job creating the Y/C signal. S-Video is a fancy name for the Y/C signal.

It ended up being the S-Video cable. It looks MUCH better now that I've gotten a new one.

Depending on your TV the S-Video will give you some great results, but if you don't have an S-Video then the reason to own an R7G lessens.
