Recently I picked up my first LaserDisc player and well not the greatest one it works for my purposes, however I've noticed on a few movies when it gets close to the end of a disc it skips or gets stuck then jumps to the end of the movie and it ends.

To me, an uneducated laserdisc fan, it seems that the rails might be dirty and the lens assembly is getting stuck or having issues moving close to the end. So I was thinking about cleaning the rails and reoiling, but I've read mixed things about that.
Any suggestions on what to do?

Sounds fine, just don't get anything on the rubber parts, when they get oil or grease they will slip.

Also it could be something needs to be adjusted with tracking??? Or even a warped disc.

Is it happening only on CAV discs ? Or also on CLV ?

So far only noticed in CAV discs. I tried out a couple of CAV movies tonight and none were impacted..

I'll keep trying and keep track of when it happens.

ok, I had exactly the same problem with my HLD-X0 last year, before he died...
The good news is that you will not have this problem with any CLV. Then you should focus on buying CLV discs (90% of movies LD)
The bad news is that it is certainly an alignement problem of the pick up. And It will take you hours, expensive tools, and strong knowledge if you want to repare it.
For a cheap player as the CLD-2400, I wouldn't spend time and money. You should just enjoy CLV movies.
You can also use your player as a "training" for learning how to do alignement, but in this case, I recommend you to buy an other player to watch movies instead.

Pretty common problem with "industrial" discs. They were typically poorly cared for so they have warped edges which cause tracking problems with some players that are out of adjustment. Even when properly adjusted, the warp is simply too large for the optics to compensate for at the outer edge of the disc. The trouble with CAV movies is they almost never go all the way out to the edge, where industrial discs often did. Some discs I've simply given up being able to watch all the way through when I can't it to play on any of the 7 players I have currently setup. I'll never know the outcome of rebuilding that Ford differential :(

Ah that's good to know, I have an older CAV disc and it would play fine on some players but not others, never thought about the extreme edges etc.
But it is flat and has been well taken care of for the past 15 or so years I've owned it.

It’s usually the focus servo adjustment, but I have seen LDs age to the point that some players may not be able to handle the LD. Combination of how the laser assembly and main board electronics sync together.

I was thinking that as well.

My Pro-Scan, PS-LD43, had an issue a few years back in which it would have thick lines on the CAV discs toward the edge (I think it was the Criterion “Close Encounters Of The Third Kind” CAV). I messed with the focus and then just like that it was fine again.

However, I did have to return a Criterion “Robinson Crusoe On Mars” CAV that had extreme tracking issues on side 3 & 4 at the end of each side that I verified was a defective disc since three of the players I tested it on exhibited the exact same issues.

So at the end, it’s sometimes the player and sometimes the disc.
