Hello all! 6 months ago I started collecting and enjoying laserdiscs. I had no idea how joyous the format is. It started when I bought a Pioneer CLD-V880 at thrift shop and then a few weeks later I picked up The Gate to the Mind's Eye and was blown away. Since then I got a second player, a Pioneer CLD-S201, and a small collection of discs. I have found a new home here at LDDB! Thank you all for sharing you knowledge and experiences!

Thanks awfully! :) I watch craigslist like a hawk. In fact the second to last listing you linked is the garage sale where I bought the S201!

Sigh...I remember when I got my S201. It came from Fretter Appliance I think...maybe Highland...don't recall. Winter of 1992 (a year that we now know was a high mark for LD in many ways). $379.99 was the price and I could barely afford it. My first discs were Far and Away and Project A-ko. The player is long gone, replaced by a dozen others. I still have the discs though and have viewed both in the last year.

That's cool. I really like the S201 except it is a bit loud at high rpm but that's ok. I am excited to build up my collection and knowledge. I am lucky that my wife has also gotten hooked!

Hi & welcome ckeith721,

looks like you have got the LD bug..... no bad thing, enjoy .

Are you guys where you are sitting on a mother-lode of retro/LD stuff? You are bagging some pretty cool & interesting players/discs.

Keep posting.

Cheers

Thanks! I have always had a thing for the old school. LD is the latest addition to the list. Our biggest collection is vinyl records, we have been collecting them for 6 years and have just over 800 albums.......hope to have a LD collection that size someday. Also we collect HD DVD and VHS. There is something magical and different about each of the forgotten formats but LD is the one that really has my heart! It has the most character and you just never know what crazy, cool, odd, or obscure thing you will find for it. I have been fortunate enough to find some treasures like Gate to the Mind's Eye, Outrageous Animation - vol.2, and Wallace and Gromit - Collection out in the wild and for just a couple of bucks each. I just picked up Laser Optics II, for $1 at a Half Price Books, and while it I know it is really just a Pioneer advert I can't help but love it!! I will have to add the collection to my profile soon and while it is sorta small at the moment I am quite proud of what I have!

@dutchinmiami Yeah space (and cash) are a bit of an issue for me. I am glad that the US embraced LD back in the day as much as we did. The odd thing is I looked for a couple of years before I found my first player. Of course I could have just bought one online but I like finding things in the wild at pawn shops, thrift shops, and so on. The V880 I found at a thrift shop and the S201 at a garage sale.

Yeah it is a neat player. I love the looks and it a solid player!! That DVL-K88 would be great and it looks awesome!! I hope they stop flaking and give you a good deal. I do think LD and DVD in one would be cool.
