Hello!

Glad to be here on the forums, hope you all are well.

So here's my story...
In 1994 (I was 14 at the time) a friend of mine had a Laserdisc player. I remember being impressed by the format, both the video and audio (I was used to VHS, and even worse, copied VHS), but also the sheer size of the discs themselves. We watched movies like Waterworld and Jurassic Park, among others. He didn't have any kind of "exotic" titles, since LD was stupidly expensive in Norway.

Since then, I wanted a Laserdisc player. Through the video generations of VHS, DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, Laserdisc was the coolest of them all. I thought that back then, and I still do. But never got around to collecting the format.

So, fast forward almost 23 years. I saw an ad for a LD player and 70 movies for sale in my local area. With a tax refund in my pocket, I realised my old dream of owning one of these beasts and starting a collection. I got a Pioneer CLD-D515, a lot of action titles, and the thing that sealed the deal - 13 Bond titles of various vintage (mostly "Gold leaf" LBX titles, but also some of the 1993/4 remasters, some still sealed).

I put an ad where I saw the first ad, and managed to get a hold of two(!) more players, one of which is now my main (Pioneer CLD-V820). The other is another PAL/NTSC unit, the Pioneer CLD-950. The 950 I got for an absolute steal (roughly $20, which is incredibly cheap in my area). It needs a good dusting and probably needs to have its belts cleaned, but it works!

So, if you've read all of this, thank you :) Hope to see you around.

Welcome! It was great to hear your story, congrats on getting a laserdisc collection after all these years!

Its a very fulfilling hobby I think you will enjoy it, I am pretty new to LD myself, and like you some of the first discs I got were a bunch of the Bond movies!

Thanks! I'm glad my intro wasn't too long or boring :)

I'm loving it already. I'm getting some of my old favorites on LD, and planning an LD movie night currently. And yes, big Bond fan. I find it very interesting to see the differences between the releases that came out over the years, from the CBS/FOX releases up to the later THX ones.

Most excellent story !
Thank you for sharing Prim !

Love reading laserdisc stories of discovery.
Those large shiny platters did have the tendency to leave an impression when first encountered.
Some of those lasting impressions have lead members like yourself to this forum many years later.

Is it any wonder that we are still communicating in a forum with the common denominator being LaserDiscs ?

I think so !

Keep 'em Spinning mates !

Glad I could give you something (hopefully) interesting to read :)
Yeah, the format left quite an impression on me as a youngster. It stuck in there, and I never forgot.

The discs often make people go "what the hell...?" when they see them, which I always find amusing, especially in this day and age of streaming and the like (I've often shown my friends what the format is all about even if I didn't own it until recently, since the format is so fascinating). I miss the old days, and maybe this is my way of making sure I don't forget? I don't know. When you buy one of these discs, it feels like you actually OWN something. I have a large DVD/BD collection already, so there's no shortage of physical media around the house, but none are as cool as LD. It's a badass format.

Anyway, glad to be here, and thank you all for you welcomes. I appreciate it. See you around, I hope.
