Hi, All! I'm Matt.
I recently picked up a Pioneer DVL-909 and about 100 really cheap LDs. I have never seen a chunk of the LDs I bought, or it's been a long time since I've seen them. So this is an awesome way to fill the small amount of relaxation time I'll have this summer.
I've always been a cinephile, and the interest in LD is greatly nostalgic. I grew up in the 90s and was the only kid I knew with a LD player (and Beta! - no VHS). We lived near a large city that had a LD rental store. My father was into the "tech of the future" and our living room was decked out with an amazing sound system. I've always loved the format - it was my childhood - and, luckily, my father still has our family collection.
I bought my player two weeks ago and am now obsessed with trying to learn everything I can about the the history, video/audio technology, printings/releases, etc. I've been reading a lot about LD and watching some great videos on Youtube. It's all quite fascinating for me. I'm hoping to continue to grow my collection and learn a lot about LD in the process. Hence why I joined. I'm looking forward to interacting with LDDB and other lovers of LD!

Hello Matt,

Beta, now that is dedication. Cudos ! All I can think of to ask is "what took you so long ....... ? "
Glad to read that the family collection is still intact. What an awesome environment your dad nurtured.

Big welcome to the LDDB Membership sir.

Happy hunting augmenting your collection !

Cheers,

James

Thanks, James.
Yeah, growing up, my friends were always amazed by our laserdiscs.
Actually, I'm planning an undergraduate film course for the near future based around the Netflix series Stranger Things. It'll use our contemporary moment as a lens to read the politics and culture of the 80s. And I want to introduce students to a bunch of the films that the tv show draws from (Steven King, Spielberg, etc). And I thought it'd be great to show a few films on VHS. So I was considering picking up a VHS player and some tapes (which I'll still do), but then thought about how much fun it'd be to get LD. The students who are into media will totally geek about it. Yet all of a sudden, I just wanted to be able to watch LDs at home again. So much fun, and something that will last and be far more enjoyable (imo) than VHS. So it's definitely for me now. But it was generated by my idea for a film class.

Right on !
Students would definitely get a kick out of LD .....
Hope you show 'em the "way" of LaserDisc !

Glad your interest has been rekindled !

My son is 21 this year, all while growing up his friends would come over and be like "wow" about the shelves of titles ......
The most obvious question is always "what do you play them on ! ? ! "
It is really fun watching the wonderment as you power up and eject the tray ............

Cool beans, once again WELCOME ABOARD !

Hi Matt,

Welcome to LDDb and to The Forum! It's wonderful to hear your story, and your father sounds like a great guy! He certainly raised his son right, my friend! Your words convey a marvelous passion for this hobby and for film in general. Don't ever lose that, brother! Just last month I surpassed 30 years of collecting, and believe me, it still seems just as fresh and exciting to me today as it did in 1987! There's something about this format that, even though it was surpassed from a technical standpoint long ago, just never seems to get old! You're in the right place here, my friend, among like-minded people with a wealth of knowledge to share with your in your quest. You'll find this to be, for the most part, a quite friendly place. This is a splendid website Julien has created for us here, full of valuable information. Take time to look around the place, and make yourself at home! I'm sure when you have time to check it out you will find many fascinating titles in this database that you never knew were released on laserdisc. It's great to have you on board with us!

Best Regards,
David
