Ok ,we all know that 6 side cav releases like Akira look amazing and also 2 disc gatefold artwork is impressive
but the laserdisc could also compete against the vhs and dvd in terms of portability ,storage, picture quality
and better covers with some well done single disc editions,........ill post the first one;

Alíen Resurrection (0032585) thx. Jacket made USA, Dics Japan made.

with almost 55 min on each side it surpass by far the picture quality of the vhs
not reaching the resolutión of the dvd but also beating its cinema-like picture
anyday......the ultra slim jacket for storage purposes and beauty cover throws
the vhs and dvd editions to the recycle bin

Yes, this release indeed looks pretty good. There is a DTS version too.

Toy Story (6073 AS) looks and sounds pretty good, though it is computer animated of course.

It's my favorite entry in the series and the disc looks and sounds superb.

Image

It's the first official means to see the movie in the OAR in the West (unless you imported one of the Japanese LDs or got a bootleg of one of them back in the day.) Not the greatest transfer (taken from a print) but definitely better than any of the previous P&S jobs. And has some nice extras. Plus the commentary track featured here has been re-used over and over again for the subsequent DVD/Blu-ray releases (save for the latest DVD/Blu-ray release from Arrow Video in the UK.)

Only way to get the Academy Ratio version of the movie (well, aside from the VHS release from the same year, but who really counts that one?) Details on the differences between the Academy Ratio version and the CinemaScope version can be found here: http://animatedviews.com/2006/lady-and- ... m-edition/

It is funny you mention that release, ertollo. I actually wanted to mention this very disc: From Tusk Till Dawn dts

It really looks great and sounds fantastic. Still it doesn't look as good as a DVD in my opinion but it does look very good indeed.

One that stands out for me is the PAL release of commando. Great clear picture and side 1 runs to about 62 minutes. Must be the longest running time for a single side I've seen.

Visited my dad today, took one of my backup players and a couple discs. He wanted to watch Top Gun. Not the greatest movie ever, but entertaining. The wide screen release is nice. Plus the audio sounds good, if a little bass heavy.

I'm really a fan of Hong Kong movies on LD. They are usually widescreen with English subtitles and look loads better than their DVD counterparts because those usually have horrible compression artifacts. Here is Full Throttle, an over-the-top action movie starring the great Chow Yun-Fat. Picture quality is good and the entertainment value is high. Most movies are under 2 hours so they tend to be 1 disc releases.

For my favorite 1 disc release though:

Nice glossy cover. Includes dubbed and original language tracks in addition to a full running commentary by Robert Rodriguez. If you've ever been interested in film making the commentary is a great listen.

Great sound and transfer on this one too. From what I've read, it has much better sound than the subsequent Sony Columbia DVD.
And it's the only way to get the Director Alan Parker commentary track.
