wow, i remember seeing that HK sell back in the day.

i also remember the next day running down to chinatown and checking every shop that sold audio and video stuff for old LDs they had, found a whole bunch of different discs but never that song of the south.

Most valuable (sentimental reasons, commercial value is 0.0): PAL Dutch release of "Witness","Terms of endearment", "Tina Turner: Rio 88" and "Dire straits: Brothers in Arms 8inch". First discs I got from my parents with my Pioneer CLD 1500 way back in 1990.

They remain the jewels in my collection.

Does anyone know how much the HK release of Song of the South fetches? It's funny to think this is rare - growing up in England, I saw this film 100s of times on VHS.

One sold on eBay recently for $106:

However, according the seller, the 2nd side is unplayable (for whatever reason). It may have been worth the $106 just for the artwork alone, though.

I paid $1,100.00 for mine 10 years ago. It's a purchase I've never regretted.

This LD is rated as no. 3 or 4 on the Brian May rarities list. Great for any Queen collector.

My most valuable disc is probably the 1976 MCA Disco-Vision single-sided test pressing of the movie "High Planes Drifter" - it's 4 single-sided discs, like the 8-inch LD Singles, and quite flexible - the players were to have a stabilizer disc that rode on top of the disc and flattened it and made it more rigid via the Bernoulli effect. On the later LaserDisc players that play the 8-inch LaserDisc singles, the test pressing plays perfectly and on top loaders or other players, a regular disc on top makes it clampable and play without slipping.

Interestingly, its the edited for television version of the film, which MCA did so it could be shown at demos with its R-Rated portions taken out. Unlike the final double sided retail discs, its transfer is from a film chain and not a flying spot scanner transfer like DiscoVision innovated.

Do you have an opened copy to watch?

To me, sealed copies are worth less than an opened copy because you have no idea if any of the discs are defective or have rotted. I know most colliectables are worth more in their pristine, sealed state, but LaserDisc is one item where an opened, QC'd copy is worth way more than a sealed unknown.

To me, the principal value of a videodisc lies in being able to watch the program. Thus, a sealed one is quite uninteresting.

Agreed, although I do like buying sealed DiscoVision in the open top boxes that used the felt disc sleeves - although I know the disc will probably be bad, and I have basically every title MCA released anyway, there is something cool in knowing that the disc inside hasn't been exposed to air since it was originally shrink wrapped back in 1978/79 - and I like the smell of a freshly opened open top box - I assume its the chemicals of whatever they impregnated the felt disc sleeve with to make it resist moisture - so its probably really toxic - but that smell creates a very strong 'sense memory' and takes me back to the early days of the format.

I admit, the Japanese LD packaging has its own distinctive odour, which does elicit a certain emotional response, but for me it's mostly, "oh goodie! what do we have here?".
