I'll be in Tokyo and Kyoto in March for a couple of weeks. Would like to pick up a few discs. Any advice on where to do some shopping? I'd like to pick up some discs that are hard to come by in the U.S.

you will not be finding so many laserdiscs at record shops in tokyo. I can only think of rarerecords. Dont remember their website but they have a store in Nakano near the station, just the opposite side of the huge bowling/entertainment builind(build sort of like a pyramid). They got another store at the same train line but I dont remember the name, its almost next to the station. These 2 _I know have laserdiscs, kind of expensive for being in Japan.

Otherwise hardoff might the most fun for a 1st timer.

Also http://www.recofan.co.jp/map/beam.html recofan beam in shibya got some, first they have a couple of boxes next to the elevator and then they have some more if you just turn left at the entrence and walking threw the J-pop music. they mostly have prices between 100-300 yen each.

I cant say so much about kyoto becouse I dont remember there being any laserdiscs in the record stores, but I might be wrong. but I know there is a hardoff on the way there from osaka whch had a few.

I dont think there is so much lds anymore becouse they cant get more then 100 yen and even then its not easy to get rid off, and lets face it 100 yen is not alot of money so I think they just dont care anymore.

could be, just across the street there is a Rare Records with 2 floors, lds was on the first last time I was there. And a Disk Union record store across the same side as the Sunplaza.

There used to be a lot of nice stores in the mall in nakano, feels like mandrake owns most of the stores there. Most stores are gone nowdays.

funny how they can't get that much but people here in the USA will still pay for discs.
people in Japan have to start listing on ebay again, there used to be good stuff and people would pay shipping.
but now there is very little on ebay in the way of Japanese imports.

That's actually my greatest concern with LD these days: that people are just binning the things left and right. Space is pretty valuable in Japan and LDs are huge, with most being worthless.

I onced walked by a store that had put a kareoke machine + aprx. 50 discs out on the street in osaka. He was hoping that someone would grab this and take home.

And remember its not the disk union that got the laserdiscs, its a store on the opposite side, pretty close to that second circly (from the station).

But like I said, I think shibya might be most fun for you, atleast they are cheap. http://www.recofan.co.jp/map/beam.html there is also Disk union stores on the way if you interested in music. great heavy metal/punk section in shibya.

You are right - I'd always assumed they had a shop in Tokyo but having checked they don't. I've bought lots of great discs from them.
Still one of the best places to buy music LDs without having to travel to Tokyo!....you can do it from your armchair!

Depending on how fast paced your trip is, I would still recommend poking around random record stores along the way.
Johan184 is right, they will be mostly dry of ld's however there is a chance for that rare pearl in the mud.......
Safe travels when you go ..........

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm making a checklist of places to go/check-out for laserdiscs. I'm not looking to get a bunch, just a few titles. It's more just about being able to look for laserdiscs in Tokyo (longtime dream), than actually buying anything. I would like to at least get a couple of nice discs, just as a "been there, done that" kind of thing. I did the same thing in Hong Kong last year. Didn't find much, but had fun looking!

Keep the suggestions coming.
