 er ok get back to me when all movies look analog like they do on Laserdisc.

Blu-Ray and 4K look truly analog like 35mm and 70mm, Laserdisc has that restricted, almost fake analog look due to the limitations of the format.

You just can't see the beauty of LD due to the limitations of yourself.

Laserdisc like bu-ray has it's good pressings and bad pressing. When they were done property they were superb. Sadly when done badly they were an embarrassment. I haven't forgotten Criterion's The Blob. A complete letdown when I saw it.

Very true.

LD seems to have more variability from one release to another than any other optical disc format I've seen since. My own take is that as an analogue format the process of disc mastering was as much art as science and those who knew the tricks of the trade and the foibles of the equipment they were using were the ones who got the best results.

Digital techniques introduce a predictability and consistency that can be a strength but also allow some ignorant fools to erase everything from a film transfer that we might appreciate.

I feel that some of the best releases are the early ones done right.
They are just transferred directly from the source material, some are a little too dark or light, some may even have audio issues,
but they are as close to film as you can get for the time.

Like blam has posted about some early Discovision titles how they are struck directly from the nitrate film, they look amazing.
Even some of the films from the early to mid 80s that were pressed when they first came out look as good as any release without any digital mucking.

But there are lots of really, really bad releases on LD also as you have mentioned above.
I think they are more of the films that people wanted to care about like for example Aliens, people were saying that it was too this or that, I can't remember now.
But films that were just transferred to LD without any special edition, they look great as long as they weren't mucked with.

The best PQ LD's don't seem to be time dependant, more about the mastering.

Later great releases there are obvious examples like fifth element and starship troopers, then I picked up Ferris Bueller's day off from the 80's and it's so good!

No doubt individual examples abound but release date of the LD has a poor correlation to PQ in my experience. THX releases are a good example. They're all later releases (that allegedly offered the best PQ), but very variable in my experience - just like every LD release before them.

 The LD box set of Aliens is supposed to be "really really bad"? To me it's the absolute best edition to own, it's just perfect, looks and sounds amazing.

My best looking disc besides demo and music discs is probably Robocop Criterion, just perfect.

I love a lot of Japanese music video discs for PQ too. Globe's Faces Places LD is unbelievable, Yumi Tanimura My Prism is just beautifully filmed and looks incredible on LD.

Well, I never thought it was bad but Ty-Disclord said that it was trasfered wrong along with the box set of Alien.
The first one he said was over matted when widescreen, Aliens had something to do with?? DNR or something that it was cleaned up and then boosted?

I can't remember, there is mention of it in a topic but I can't remember which one and don't have time to search right now.

There are a lot of issues that I can't even see or notice but others can. :wtf:

The master must have been well shot, might be why it got the 4K treatment?

Commando (the 1996 pressing) has got one of the best non-THX transfers I've seen to date, I prefer it to the blu-ray.

Boogie Nights Criterion and Seven Criterion are both very impressive.

Alien THX AC3 is another excellent transfer.

T2 THX Squeeze is also really nice.

For my part, I wasn't especially impressed by the picture quality of this edition. The Japanese "Special Collection" edition of the original Star Wars Trilogy movies seems better to me.

The THX version of Independence Day looks amazing to my eyes. Yet another crap movie with a great LD. :)

Zeta, what would you say are some of the best looking anime discs of GOOD movies/oavs? Disregarding DYRL and GITS as I already have those.
