Hey all,

I know I've been pretty inactive here as of late. I've still got all my stuff; I've watched a large number of full-screen discs; I picked up more earlier last month. But that loading belt on my player seems to be pretty worn and I haven't had a lot of screen-time to get around to this forum (because accessing it on my phone is a pita). I'm gonna pick up a better video-scaling solution over the holiday season so I can watch this Star Trek VI laserdisc I picked up.

Anyway; a couple weeks ago my dad ran across three laserdiscs at a thrift store and picked them up; Basic Instinct and Mighty Ducks. There's just one problem....all three were stuffed in a "elephant condom" and looked like they'd been around the block in that condition. Mighty Ducks would probably play; but I already have a near-mint one with jacket. Basic Instinct would have had issues as the scuffing is so bad on one side. I really don't need any more laserdiscs without jackets; I've got a whole stack of just discs in rental bags; and believe me; no one would want to buy just the discs to fill in a set. They're pretty bad. So I really didn't know what to do with them outside of experiments in scratch removal. But I thought about an idea I had back when I had a cracked disc before it decided to break in half; a clock.

My idea is simple. Since I've decided to "trash" the three discs; disc 1 of Basic Instinct will have all the clock hardware mounted to it. disc 2 however has a different fate. When I dig my Dremel out of storage; I'm going to see how difficult it'll be to cut a piece of disc to fill the hole so I can mount the clock hardware to it. Sure, I've got lots of easier ways of doing it; but I think filling the hole with a piece of laserdisc will just add to the look. The outside diameter of the disc will have a piece of EL tubing to not only give it some light; but I'm hoping the rainbow effect will show through on it. I've also considered adding a pendulum; and decorating it with a larger chunk of laserdisc...with EL tubing around that. The only problem is I don't know if I'm going to want to go through the extra effort of trying to modify a standard craft pendulum mechanism to have a swing that would match the curve of the disc itself.

Anyway; I ordered some clock parts and EL lighting kits and when they arrive; will see what I can throw together. Of course I'll post pics if it turns out great.

really, this idea has been done? and here I was thinking I'd come up with something original.

I was doing that with old circular saw blades ages ago for friends to put up in their shop basements or garages. It was easier than an LD because the center hole is smaller and you can fill it with a brass or steel fender washer epoxied in place.

Craziest repurposing of an LD was a video I saw on youtube a while back. Guy had an LD turned into an LP! Dunno how anyone was able to cut grooves into that acrylic, but he was able to play it on a turntable!

A couple of years ago we sold 250 to 300 of our "not so desireable titles" to a local fellow who was doing exactly that. Nice thing was it didn't matter if the disc had rot as long as the acrylic surface was good. Made a few bucks and made some space
