The Star Wars Special Widescreen Edition is DVNR-free and the Technidisc pressings don't suffer from the "incredible shrinking aspect ratio" problem.

If you're OK with CLV, then these are a cheaper alternative to the (Japanese) "Special Collection", as they use the same masters*.

*Note: The Technidisc pressing of Episode IV uses a different master. It seems to be sourced from the interpositive print that was used to strike the theatrical release prints. The (Japanese) "Special Collection" master of Episode IV was sourced from an earlier interpositive print that was created prior to the addition of Greedo's subtitles.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll buy these while I continue the never-ending search for the Special Collection discs!

Are they the correct aspect ratios? I ask because the SW:SE LaserDisc's do not have the correct aspect ratios. EP4-SE is 2.21:1 and EP5/6-SE are both 2.28:1, when they should all be 2.40:1, although everyone still calls it 2.35:1, which anamorphic Panavision hasn't been since 1971. And of course, we don't know how much of the image that we are seeing is correct - although I'm not terribly surprised by the incorrect AR's, it's just another example of the joke that the THX program was becoming by that time; and how far they had strayed from their originally stated goals and standards that everything would be "exactly right"..

thanks I updated the list again. Added a number of new "not on dvd" titles. Updated the special chapter with landmark LDs. Nearly 2 full pages of unique LDs. Beside the super expensive rare ones, these should be in LD loves collection for their unique value.
I got 2 more thread reserved, lets see when I will run out of space:)

The last count I heard was ~278 lines. I'll look into this soon.

Does anyone know if any DVD release of "For Richer or Poorer" (1998) comes with the special features that the Laserdisc has? According to the database, the signature edition LD includes:

* Feature commentary with Director Bryan Spicer
* A Featurette on the making of 'For Richer or Poorer' (side three)
* Extended and Deleted scenes.
* The original ending
* The Theatrical Trailer (side four, chapter 5)
* Outtakes

So its a nice pile of extras. At most I've only seen DVD versions listed with soundtracks dubbed in French and Spanish, subtitles in Spanish and English, and production notes, cast and crew biographies, and a theatrical trailer.

Can anyone confirm this? Because otherwise the Laserdisc may be the only place to get these special features and there is no Blu-Ray release yet.

It's a good film too..

I don't know about the other extras, but the commentary track is unique to the LD format.

Very nice effort substance, great job on compiling this list!

This may be of interest, never released in US on DVD (that I could find). Other countries have released it on DVD, with the Japanese version LBX like the laserdisc

Regarding original theatrical cuts of the Star Wars trilogy, those were made available on DVD. The 2006 box sets have both the 2004 editions and the original theatrical editions (albeit in non-anamorphic form).

Only way (unless the VHS release is good enough for you) to get the uncensored "Trail Mix-Up" (censored on the Japanese release LD, and censored on the recently released blu-ray.)

Re Star Wars episodes 4-6; If you are looking for the unedited versions of the films, without added computer graphics, it might as well be mentioned that there are DVDs.

Although Lucas spent decades saying that there would never be a DVD release of the original version, there were two-disk "Limited Edition" releases of the DVDs in 2006 that had the edited director's cut on disk A - widescreen, edited the way Lucas likes it, etc. - and a cleaned-up but otherwise unedited transfer of the original laserdisc version (letterboxed standard format) on disk 2. Not sure which laserdisc versions they used, for A New Hope it appeared to be the first release. Han shot first etc.

They were on sale in the UK for several months but when they sold out they didn't make more. I think that there was also a Region 1 release (they'd be stupid not to) but I'm not 100% sure.

The DVD OOT (aka GOUT) was based on the D1 masters used for the 1993 Definitive Collection LD's. By then there was already some noise reduction etc...

The original Star Wars versions were released on Region 1 DVD. As far as I know they are OOP.
