I tried taking a pic of a set I have to send here but light reflected off it and my shadow got in the way. Maybes I need a better camera? The main problem I saw with that was the plastic cover, which is causing a lot of reflections and glare. If you can take that off the results should be a lot better. If you don't want to remove it, e.g. because the disc is still sealed, a polarising filter may help, they're designed to reduce reflections. I'd suggest trying that before buying a new camera, it looked like the pictures would have been OK without the plastic. Depending on the lens size a polarizer can cost from about £3 upwards. But polarizers don't always work with plastic, you may find that you get weird colour effects, so I can't give any guarantee.

Julien Would this method be good for obtaining LD cover shots for the database? There are some titles I have that I want to add cover images to, but I don't have a large enough scanner.

Though you come off with a purpose, try it step-a: open file step-b: adjust color/contrast(auto) step-c: select and crop step-d: transform skew step-e: duplicate layer and blending change(normal to multiply) step-f: equate width with height
