I just bought Manhunter and E.T. on LD. My copy of E.T. actually has the record of Michael Jackson reading ET with it an the book that came with that vinyl set. That Michael Jackson E.T. record wasn't sold with the laserdisc though, was it?

Last LD I bought, well, I just bought them and they should be on their way. These discs . . .

. . . I got the other two LDs in this series not too long ago, Cold Eyes of Fear and Devil's Nightmare. They're not particularly good movies (in fact they're referred to as "Sleaze Epics"), but what makes them interesting are the intros. Apparently, this was released as part of a series called "Redemption Video" which featured intros by this vampire girl? Crow girl? I can't really say for sure. She's got fangs, wings and black plumes on her head. It's kind of what Elvira did on those "Midnight Madness" and "Thriller Video" releases where she introduces the movie and talks about them. Only thing is, the hostess here doesn't really talk about the movie per se, but more about other crap that has nothing to do with the movies (cat girls, cannibal girls, etc.) All just an excuse to show some naked girls doing stupid crap. I thought it was amusing so I decided to get all the titles released on LD. They're not particularly rare (all four were also released on DVD and VHS in the late 1998-1999.) But it seems no other releases from "Redemption USA" were ever made on LD. At least not with this intro lady. Its parent company Salvation Films is still around it seems. They may have made more with these cheesy intros, but I can't say for sure.

Here's a video for the production title for "Redemption USA", but you'll need to login to Youtube to see it (requires age verification because of nudity):

My last purchase was the Criterion Collection Pulp Fiction Box set. It was absolutely beautiful. I had just recently bought the BluRay. I already had the normal Pulp Fiction LD but will now use this to frame and hang on the wall.

Nice purchase veddermandan, I can still remember when I bought it myself. My first Criterion ever.

I purchased Hard-Boiled and A Hard Day's Night by Music & More here on LDDB some days ago, both Criterion and CAV-editions.

Das Boot directors cut (My copy is pressed by Pioneer. In X-360 sound which is actually SQ Quad! I can't believe they didn't do an AC-3 of this disc since the 6-track sound is so amazing - original theatrical release was in Vibrasound!)
Criterion Close Encounters (2nd release with mostly corrected chapters, plus in a box instead of the horrible original 3 panel jacket)
Panasonic Multi-LaserDisc Demo disc (no analog tracks but great video and PCM audio! Is this a Super LaserDisc?)
Saving Pvt Ryan (had to have it since its the last Paramount film with AC-3 on LaserDisc, even though it's really an Image release)

In the US, it was a DreamWorks release in the theaters and on LD (released on 6/29/99). The Japanese LD is on Paramount as Paramount were distributors outside of the US (released 6/25/1999).

PayPack was the very last US released AC-3 Paramount LaserDisc (7/27/99)
Mission: Impossible 2 was the last Paramount film issued on LaserDisc in Japan with AC-3 sound (4/3/2001)

Things I purchased in the last week have been:
Les Misérables - LLD-26591
The Bone Collector - LD85238-WS
Smokey and the Bandit - 12004 (MCA Home Video Version)
Color Me Barbra - 3518-80
My Name is Barbra - 3519-80
Up the Sandbox - 11325
Les Misérables - 10th Anniversary "Dream Cast" - ID3465VL
One True Thing - LD83659-WS

I have Alien 3 from that set. It's a godsend compared to the standard US release.
Other than that, I picked up the other two from the US for very low prices.

Lust picked up Dream Cast: Les Miserables in Concert: 10th Anniversary [ID3465VL]

Does the AC-3 Japanese Alien use the same 6-track temp Sensurround mix as the US AC-3 or does it use the 'real' AC-3 mix?

I just got a bunch of RCA Red Seal classical LaserDisc'a and Philips classical CDV intro releases - I was surprised to discover that Philips made a CDV opening logo for the first 12-inch CDV discs - and some are pressed in England and Germany, while others are Pioneer. The england and Germany discs both have very light speckling, reminding me of DiscoVision. The RCA's are 3M. I also got OPA's last release The Incredible Story Disc which was released in 1985 but has hand scratched numbers on the outer edge meaning it was mastered years before by DiscoVision and not released for whatever reason. It isn't even in any catalog, so MCA just threw it out there.

The sound quality of the RCA Red Seal and Philips Classics is beautiful - one of the Philips discs came with a catalog of other titles, so I know what I'm going to have to look for now. I'm playing them on the Philips CDV-488 since that player was Philips launch CDV player and it just seems 'right' to play them on it. Plus, it has the wonderful 4x over sampled S1 Crown 16-bit DA converters that, to me, sound better than the modern low-bit, highly over sampled delta/sigma converters. It's too bad there's no way to make a digital I put to the Philips and use it as an external DA converter.

The US AC-3 LaserDisc of Alien has much greater and deeper bass plus different music cues here and there since the score wasn't finished. It also has stereo surrounds which no release until the BD had - and the BD's stereo surrounds are 'fake' sounding. Also, snippets of dialog are missing from the LaserDisc version. The bass is really incredible on the AC-3 LaserDisc, especially the Nostromo landing since it was supposed to be presented in the Sensurround Special Effects System. But fox went with Dolby instead of MCA for their sound.
