I'm noticing you guys are mostly all from Europe. Was teletext on LD only a PAL disc thing? Then NTSC had 'CC' in the states or LD-G in Japan?

Yeah, teletext was mostly an EU thing. I think they tried a version in USA but it never really took off. Closed Captions is the nearest USA equivalent but Teletext was much more than just subtitles. It was almost like a read only internet on your TV.

Yes we had it here in Australia too but less content than Europe I think, and thought it was only ever on broadcasts had never realised it was incorporated onto some PAL LD's. Primarily used here for subtitling, news/weather and TAB (race/sports betting) results. Very little or no user content as was mentioned previously.

It was only used on a handful of LDs here, mainly the Pioneer Cinema Collection, though not even all of them had Teletext.

Some of the Dutch discs such as Forrest Gump had Dutch subtitles in the form of Teletext.

Lddb currently has four pages of results for laserdiscs that support teletext:

Seems I were a bit wrong about teletext being shut down. Our 2nd TV channel discontinued the service 31st of January, but the first one still has it operational. When accessing teletext on the 2nd TV channel it says "TV2 teletext were discontinued 31st of January, see page 101. Subtitling for the hearing-impaired will continue on page 222. We thank all our readers for all the years we had together." Found a news article that said around 10% of the population still use the teletext service on a daily basis, but the majority were over the age of 60.

I seem to recall there being a digital version for a while in the UK, but I haven't looked in several years - is it still there?

I've no idea. These days I'm one of those weird people who don't have an ariel or digibox plugged into their TV so Ican't even check. All physical media and streaming for me these days, I've kinda cut out actual live TV.
