I've been selling off some discs, it seems that I'm selling off a bunch on ebay and none here.
Do people even really buy from lddb anymore????

Its seems that if anybody wants a disc they will pick them up from ebay or even facebook with ldforever.

Does this mean that lddb is getting phased out
I've sold over 10 in the last 20 days on ebay nothing here for the past year.

I bought 6 from LDDB.com in the last week or so but I also bought about 10 from Ebay, discogs & goodsquid.

I think prices on LDDB.com are higher than elsewhere in general so people go where they can get a bargain or where they can find the title they are after the most. In my case I'm particularly fussy about condition so will pay a little extra on LDDB.com. Got a few lovely music titles on here so its not dead yet!!

It could be due to lack of a seller product image functionality. The average customer shops with their eyes these days when shopping online and a lot of people don't even think about asking for pictures of the item being sold because they generally just expect it to be viewable. That and email communication is pretty much dead these days.

Also a lot of people have probably never heard of LDDb. I know I hadn't before, that is until a few weeks ago when Culturedog mentioned it in one of his YouTube videos. I'm very thankful I stumbled upon his YouTube channel and found out about LDDb through him as it's such a great community with great content.

I don't think LDDB's interface can be blamed if Goodsquid is still moving lots of stuff since he just shows you one bad photo of a crate and you have to figure it what it is and message him on FB to see about price/availablility.

Email is still in use for people who aren't f-ing around. Buying s**t from people on Facebook is nonsense but that's where everyone is probably going even though it sucks, probably because they spend all day there anyway.

Your LDs will be as described here and in the past some of the pillars of my collection were acquired from LDDB sellers. Reasonable prices and you know you're buying from fans who know how to treat their discs.

For the last few years if I've been able to pick up any discs, I've been after Japanese releases which are, of course better sourced from Japan. There are some key titles (mostly criterions) I still need to get at some stage and I'll turn to LDDB sellers again at that point. Shipping on ebay is usually not the actual cost of shipping from US sellers (most sellers), it's very overpriced and Australian sellers usually have junk.

I never was tempted to buy discs on LDDB since the price is never right in my book

I need to also add that the discs that I have been selling are the same prices as when they were in my shop with no offers even made.
Just buyers paying full price.

I definitely think many people are unaware you can make an offer on LDDB.com if the seller permits and most do.
I also agree many people are too lazy to send emails so maybe prefer the more instant gratification of places like facebook.
I guess people like a picture of the real thing even if it is a bad photo rather than some other persons cover like LDDB.com which tells you nothing about the actual condition of the item you are thinking of buying.

Discogs is somewhere I buy a lot of music but I've got stung a few times with sellers inflated gradings that bore no resemblance to the actual item being sold. That's why if its a valuable item, I always ask for some photos before purchasing. If the seller doesn't send any I assume the grading was inaccurate and pass it by.

Also worth pointing out listing stuff on facebook means the seller has no competition so buyers need to be more savvy about prices otherwise they could get their eyes wiped by some fly by night merchant pulling a fast one.

Per the top 100 sold list on lddb, about 10 LDs are sold everyday.
eBay is probably the easiest way to buy with the fewest steps.
Imho the FB groups are spurring new interest in LaserDisc.
What's hot and what's not changes with the tides.

I buy and sell almost exclusively on FB these days. I don't understand what you mean by "a miserable way to buy anything." Somebody posts a disc I want at a price that I'm willing to pay, I message them, I pay, they ship the disc. Doesn't seem any more convoluted than buying on lddb, except on FB I actually get responses. About 50% of my attempted purchases on lddb never complete, mostly due to the seller never responding to my shopping cart/invoice requests.

The only problem I have on FB is people who pull the ol' "PM me for prices" or "make offer" BS, but I tend to either ignore those posts or razz the seller about not posting prices.

Recently on FB, I bought a zero-rot, nearly new Space Ace disc for under $20. If you are dismissing FB, you are missing out.

Well I was never able to buy anything successfully, and I only sold 4 discs and they were to the same person after being on FB for a year.

Ebay is still and will still be the way to sell and sometimes buy at reasonable prices.

Facebook is fine if you live on Facebook, as a huge population of the planet now does. I don't, and because of that I'm not constantly staring at the dumb thing so I don't see the LD I want when it's available. You have to randomly stumble upon everything. There is no...list. I just want a list of what's for sale with prices and conditions. I don't want to scroll through thousands of random nonsense posts of noob collectards taking selfies of their LDs to find something good to watch.

Buying stuff on FB is like shopping at a flea market...but wait...you can only use one hand and you can only look through a cardboard tube with one eye to see where you're going. It's like that. Also, everyone thinks everything is awesome and rare so the prices double every year.

I prefer this forum. It's basically the same thing but minus the idiots. This makes for few conversations but the extra talk on FB is mostly noise anyway.

Agree with that.

Don't do facebook etcetera - perhaps I am missing something but don't think I am.

Almost 2 billion (really?) "monthly users" can't be wrong though, am I missing out?

I agree too. The UI in Facebook is a nightmare for finding anything.
Loads of unnecessary scrolling to find just one nugget of information.
Then when you come back 1 week later it's impossible to find it again because you are swamped with so much dross.

It's designed for disposal comments of no significance - here today and gone tomorrow, like yesterday's fish & chip paper.
I guess the same generation who use Twitter thrive in that kind of environment of throwaway information. It's not for me though.

As for the 2 billion users that's because so many people these days don't have a proper hobby.
Their 'hobby' is staying permanently logged into facebook.

Also I don't want you to think I love Ebay - I don't. It has barely changed at all since I first started using it in 2002.
Really outdate UI that is in need of a total revamp but it's still 1000 times better than Facebook for buying or selling anything and there is much more depth to it if you probe beneath the clunky UI. Facebook is as shallow and superficial as they come.

I should say, I check Facebook almost every day and I have all sorts of unrelated mixed feelings about that. I just think it sucks for shopping, so I don't use it, just as when I go to wash the dishes I don't use a mixture of lard thinned with gasoline. "Good old fashioned water" seems to be better for the job despite its prehistoric origins, same goes for YAJ, eBay, LDDB, Amazon, etc compared to FB. Yeah, even Amazon Marketplace is better than Facebook.

Hello!

Was following this discussion with interest because I know LDDb is not set up to be eBay (no auctions) and also limiting selling by selecting sellers whereas anyone can open an eBay account and start dumping whatever they have on their shelves.

About half of selling requests on LDDb will fail mostly because:

  • No answer for further details eBay/Discogs/Yahoo/etc.
  • Feedback is "I've never sold anything online"
  • "Just got that bunch of discs from boyfriend/parents/inheritance/etc and have no idea what they are, what their worth is"

In that case, I advise them to sell the whole lot on eBay instead.

Now for sales on LDDb, they are actually going up years after years.

In quantity (1 = 1 title)

 2004   97
 2005   366
 2006   857
 2007   1355
 2008   1892
 2009   1627
 2010   1699
 2011   2074
 2012   2948
 2013   2277
 2014   2101
 2015   2927
 2016   4913
 2017   3803 (up to today)

Clearly this site doesn't have the exposure/fame of eBay but the numbers are quite healthy.
I would say that there is less volume here but more accurate listing and slightly higher selling prices.

Most of the transactions are performed via "Best Offers" now.
So far 58% of them have been accepted, 21% let expired, 13% rejected.

Julien

Cool, LDDB sellers are getting paid.

Can't wait to be in a position to buy some more key stuff here in the future.

re: facebook discussions. I kinda thought the LDDB community would be anti-facebook. I mean I am, I had it for 2 months back in 2005 and quickly grew to despise it, so did the "hard" delete on my account and haven't ever had the desire to go back. It's like, most of us remember or aspire to the time before "social media", the old days. We "think in analogue", remember when life was simpler and more focused. I strive to be more focused and less distracted by modern life daily. Bring things back to closer to what they used to be... fxxx the modern world, seriously, it's completely retarded in so many ways..
