Since laser rot began right from the factory, if all these years a Laserdisc shows no signs of laser rot does that mean those Laserdiscs will be pretty much safe from it appearing in the (near) future?

Thanks in advance. 8-)

As someone who has really no extended long term experience keeping LDs, my short answer is... you should be fine (for now).

I've read people claim rot gets worse, but also many say it never does
If your 20-30 year old discs show no signs of rotting then I think there's a good chance they will be ok for a while..

I did read some place that it usually starts to develop within the first two years after production. Considering most laserdiscs are at least 16 years old now, you should be fine. No, certain storage conditions does not cause rot. It just happens on discs made up towards the mid 80s and from certain factories. Some discs still have speckles or flaws that are not rot as well (bad master disc and so on).

If rot was going to occur, it would have already done so. If rot is already present, it can get progressively worse. For years I checked and re-checked my 3M discs, and saw no additional issues, so I stopped checking.

Rot usually begins because of a defect at the factory however it can take many many years to show up. There are also likely temp/humidity issues that can accelerate rot, probably even from a disc that wasn't even defective in the first place.

Short answer: you never know.

However, if you have owned a disc for 10 years and it's been sitting in the same climate controlled room the whole time, it'll probably outlast you. You really only have to worry about buying from non-collectors who may have just picked the thing up after 10 years sitting in a Hawaiian basement.

Unfortunately it's the players that are rotting now  We've got to keep these discs spinning!

There is no certainty that it won't happen, even if it hasn't been visible to you yet.
Speaking of it, I might check my copy of Under Siege 2, to see if it has become progressively worse than back in 2012.
