Don't know if there was a thread about the OBI strip?
Question is: Would you buy japanese LD's without the OBI strip?

When I bought my players approx 2 years ago, I never thought about the OBI's being an important accessorie of the LD jacket before.
So I bought maybe 15 discs w/o the OBI, it doesn't matter to me as it was a rookie mistake.

I don't think I'd buy a disc anymore if it's missing the OBI strip, it has to be a very special rare disc if I'd buy the disc if it doesn't have the OBI.
What would you do, is it important for you the OBI is still available or not when buying a japanese disc?

Did all japanese LD's have an OBI strip?

I don't really care. Discs without it are usually cheaper too. For the most part, it contains the same information you can find on the cover it self. Nice to have, but not a life and death necessity for me.

ok, so it doesn't matter to you, that's ok.

how would hardcore LD geek respond to a missing OBI?

I found swedish ninja movie Ninja Mission on Ebay with missing OBI.
This is a very rare disc.
Seller wants 80 bucks for it.
For this amount of money it's missing something at least to me, as it's not complete!

I prefer a complete Japanese title.
More times then not, the Japansese LaserDisc was offered with some sort of obi and a likely photo / linear note insert.

A missing obi, photo insert, or any other issued "extras" will not stop me from scoring a sought after title though,
however it is much more satisfying for my taste to have the complete offering intact.

To myself much of the appeal from Japanese issued LaserDiscs is the magnificent photo layouts on the gatefold or
standard jackets, along with photo booklets, post cards, and sometimes commemorative lobby cards added for special releases.
There are several variations of the obi, and each type adds a flare to an already specially designed layout
that enhances the whole experience of collecting this format.

When the format was still "current" many consumers simply wadded up the obi and tossed it after opening
the title......
Being approx. 15 years since the format was terminated, the obi is a little bit more significant as it reflects
another piece of a bygone era.....

To each their own of course......

Well, you still get obi strips. Bought a blu-ray in December while visiting Tokyo. That one came with an obi. CDs also has obi strips. I'd say it still isn't a bygone thing. :P

Obi can be really cool if they're made to be part of the artwork. For the most part I do find them a bit obtrusive. On old video games, I usually remove them and put them inside the jewelcase.

Good evening from accross the pond: Samaron, Firehorse_44, Carlosthejackal,

When I first purchased Japanese LD imports namely: Phantom Menace and Star Wars THX Re-mastered box set, I remember throwing away the OBI Strip but since then I have come to appreciate keeping them.

Appreciation for the Japanese versions packaging grew on me, and so preferred that if the Seller had two copies and one of that had the OBI Strip I would choose the one that had this and purchase.

As mentioned in the replies above, to have the complete packaging is great for a collector.......myself included here.

If however a seller has a rare title that I am looking for, of which has no OBI but the cover and discs are in perfect condition then I shall still be willing to purchase the title.

Enjoyed reading all of your replies Guys, and thank you for sharing.

Sincerest Regards and take good care out there

Yea, one still gets obi's with certain current media........
NOT with LaserDiscs though. ; ^)

That was my point about the bygone era reference samaron.......

I also save my obi's from cd's as well..... it is a collector thing with me......
(and perbaps a bit of ocd !)

I see your point, firehorse_44. :)

The new Gundam OVA series collector's edition blu-rays are probably the closest we will get LD today. Nice box set in the same size as LDs, with obi strip around it. :)

How does people feel about reproduction obi strips? I've seen it on video games, guess the same can be applied to LD too. This of course requires someone to have the original obi, a high resolution scanner and a good printer.

I'm usually more interested in the programming than a little strip of paper.

To me the obi is 90% of the fun with LDs. Same goes for books, video games and music (if there was one originally included of course). No obi = no purchase.

ok, so there's mixed feelings about the OBI strip.
if it's not present on a disc, movie has to be very rare and special if it's for sale in only few copies, otherwise I won't buy the disc

I'm pretty particular when it comes to Japanese LDs that I'm seeking out. I'm not collecting them just to collect them, I'm usually looking for programming that I like or a particular cover.

Like this Japanese release of Homeward Bound . . .

Image

Makes the US cover look like sh!t . . .

Image

So I wouldn't need an obi for that.

Great examples for comparison elahrairrah.

For some reason Pioneer Japan pulled out all the stops for creative marketing. They actually paid people to put time into their LaserDisc jacket / gatefold projects unlike their releases in the western markets.

Any one care to answer why the stark difference in quality and creativity from Japanese issued LaserDiscs compared to releases in the rest of the world ?

They are "cheaper" to get when missing the obi...
It's nice when the strip is included but let's be honnest some obi strips don't do any justice to the artwork. they look 8-) don't get me wrong...
I own a mint MI-2 copy missing the obi. Sure, I'd like having the obi but the cover does look better without it! same goes for The Beach, X-men and many more...

when I  about The world is not enough, The Avengers or let's say American beauty it's another story... great covers but artwork is centered in the middle so the obi adds to the charm IMHO
Love my U-571 with the obi but if you ask me it doesn't need one :shh:

Obi strips aren't practical. They are troublemakers putting them in a protective sleeve. :shh:
Own several Japanese Star wars boxsets. Protecting the obi from wear and tear isn't easy.
I do my best to handle every disc (and obi) with the best of care but I'm sure others agree about the obi dillema

These days I buy Steelbook BR discs. they aren't easy to open... I mean, who in their right mind thinks of adding a piece of cardboard around the set with some sticky glue... ???? Try removing that stuff. I hate that not to mention preserve it.
Nothing more easy than a standard el cheapo plastic case I guess :shh:

I care about obi, because I dislike it ;)
I dislike it for many things :
- impossible to have every collection of everything (games, LD, CD) without missing one obi sometimes. And i hate to start collection that i cannot perfectly accomplish. Then for no discrimination, I remove all obi everytime I saw it.
- i prefer the picture of the cover without obi.
- 50 % of obi are always wraped of recieved bad treatment
- It is hard to find a way to preserve obi perfectly without damage it.
I remove them but don't worry, don't throw it ! I am not a killer ! Except when they are too much damage...

I wouldn't go out of my way for them. I do agree that Japanese covers for media tend to be classier than the US market equivalents (PAL is a mixed bag).
