Post subject:  Better than a CLD-2950 for PAL/NTSC, CAVs & sound quality

Hi,

I'm currently using a Pioneer CLD-2950 mainly for being PAL/NTSC (thanks for those who suggested this model in another post).
The first reasons why I bought this particular player are the following:
- As I listen to a lot of classical music, having both PAL & NTSC musical LDs required a multiformat player.
- I preferred an autoreverse model.
- I read that it would be more tolerant to rot / damages than a number of competitors. This happens to be useful now that I got a bunch of old CAV discs including Discovision !

So far I'm really happy with my 2950. But if there was a better model than the 2950 for the above features, what would you take for better sound ? And for better picture (movies) ? And so, to have optimal quality in both cases ?

Note that I just got a Pioneer DVL-919 (black color) which the previous owner reported as NTSC only. It's a 110V model (I'm in France).

Thanks !

The DVL-919E is the European equivalent of the black DVL-919 from the US. It is multi voltage and will play all discs except MUSE, including the early 80s analog audio only PAL discs.

Hey ! Thanks for the info. Assuming it plays all PAL discs, is it preferrable to the 2950 ? In other words, what does is do better than the 2950 ?
I don't mind having a step-down transformer. I can even try to locate the mains transformer of the 919e and put it inside.
The real question is that I would give a better sound and picture than the 2950, and that it still be as tolerant to rot/damages as the 2950 is.
Else I'll simply sell the 919 along with two other players that I have (Pioneer CLD-1500 and Panasonic NTSC/PAL autoreverse).

(will continue going through my DV dead sides for your database but wife occupies the room for now; I'll have a lot more time next week as she's going to China with the kids).

Personally I prefer a CLD-D925 over a 2950 or a 909E/919E

What do you prefer with the 925 ?
In the meantime I quickly read here and there that the Elite players are even better. But do they allow the features I need ? Just wondering.....

None of the ELITE players will play PAL discs.

If you need a "better picture" you can invest in a video processor.
There are many threads in this forum about the different models, and the two suggested ones are the Lumagen 2144 or the Crystalio II.
There are several other cheaper models which may also be quite good.

As for the 925... I used that player from 1996 on wards until I purchased a japanese NTSC only player couple years later.
Cannot say I missed it even once. You'll be shocked at the built quality compared to your 2950. It is as light as a paperweight in comparison, and has no
headphone output anymore. It can do trick play on CLV discs, and may have a "1%" better picture. It also has an AC3-RF output, if you need it. Can't think
of any other benefits when coming from the 2950. A european DVL-919E would kick its butt anyhow.

I prefer the 925 for everyday use because of the trick play memory facility for CLV playback.

It also has the original jog shuttle remote same as the 2950 which is superior to the remotes shipped with later 909/919 models which are trying to appeal to DVD owners.

Another thing with the 2950 is that I recall reading the technology inside it is antiquated. The main thing being an analog comb filter (compared to NTSC models already having digital ones at that time). The NTSC playback isn't great either. There is a thread about someone doing a mod which bypasses most of the processing circuitry which improved the picture for NTSC discs.

It is one of the better PAL players, but the more modern players, like the 909/919, would be better due to more modern processing technology.

Ok so if I understand correctly you suggest the 925 for NTSC and the 909/919 for PAL ?
I need both formats hence why I wonder about the optimal model.
If there's a mod, I'm ok to apply it if not too complicated (I service old hifi stuff).

If you can get the remote for the DVL-919 from Japan, it has the shuttle jog wheel to satisfy that desire.
