It seems my local Goodwill got somebody's collection recently. I bought everything on the rack. When I returned today, instead of movies there was alot of karaoke disks...either Japanese or from Hong Kong.

I don't really know if these are worth picking up. Do people collect them?

It seems like you are asking if you should pick them up to resell.

They can be amusing... the Oddity Archive has a series of videos about them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29xJHpGEtWA

(and some of the Pioneer ones are completely nuts, like "Suicide is Painless": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upcgwwAaesQ

I could be wrong, but it sounds like you’re asking for business advice. Kinda scummy, IMO. There are sellers here for sure but this isn’t Pawn Stars. Mostly it’s a forum for fans.

I don’t have any karaoke discs and I’ve never even seen one played except from far away in a bar. I have a (non-CD+G) karaoke player though and a three year old so I’ve been meaning to check it out. Everyone who has them in quantity though just talks about them like they were a pile of toxc waste too worthless to even list. This makes it hard for me to shop for any titles I want, being pretty snobby about music to begin with.

If you pick them up cheap enough they are fun, I picked up about 75 - 8 inch discs for around 30 bucks.

I also have a few 12 inch ones, not many, none of my players are Karaoke but I have though about having people over setting up a guitar amp with a mic and just selecting the music only tracks and sing along with them.

No, I don't want to re-sell them. I would give them away before I tried that. LDs are fun, I collect to stop thinking about work..not to work more.

I was curious as to others opinions on them..but as some of you have said. I'm probably not going to get into karaoke, so I'm gonna pass..

Unless I have to buy them to clear the space on the shelf so the store will keep bringing out the movies...

If they are cheap enough I think you will enjoy them.

But then again it all depends on how much space you have.

Is “karaoke” actually a format of disc? I ask because I have a 604 with mic jacks and some settings on the front and IIRC they don’t do anything. Do I need a karaoke disc to activate them?

I feel like such a noob asking this question. I’ve been collecting LD for decades and don’t know anything about probably the form of disc more people know than any other.

Nope, they are just regular discs.

The only thing about a Karaoke player is that you can plug your mic into the player and get your vocals and the music coming out of the same speakers.

Otherwise you can use any player and even stand in the room singing just reading the lyrics, or get a mic and amp with some reverb to feel
like you are drunk at a real karaoke bar

And just changing your audio tracks to have the pre-recorded vocals or just music with no vocals on track 1 or 2 etc.

Then shouldn’t I be able to do live commentary on any LD with a 604? It didn’t seem to work the last time I tried it. I’ve never read the manual though. It also has some kind of filter that doesn’t do anything. I’ll look into it more later.

I think you should be able to, unless the mic input is messed up or there is a setting that is turned off??
I've never had one of those player, also what about a mic volume may be messed up??

Just looked at a pictured, you have that mic input so you just need a 1/4 inch jack on your mic to plug it in and adjust the volume.
Should be able to do commentary unless it has something to do with the tracks? But I can't see how it would.

Yeah they are just regular LDs. I have a bunch. Karaoke is fun. Mix with friends and alcohol for maximum effect.

That will probably be some kind of notch filter to filter out vocal frequencies on normal music CD's and LD's so you can do the karaoke thing with them. IIRC the discs would make use of the multiple audio tracks to do things like have "assisted vocals" = a backing singer to sing along with you, or "unassisted" = music only (both with subtitled lyrics of course).

The 604 also has keyes for some kind of pitch shift, which I have tested on regular CDs and LDs and it does nothing. Maybe you need a mic in to turn that on. I tried to find an owners manual but I can only find the service manual.
