Wondering how others think about this one.

I personally would rather have the LD even if the PQ is less than the on demand DVD-R from the company.

I'm not talking about any bootleg DVDs just the DVD-R on demand that WB and a few others do.

I do own some of the MOD Manufactured on demand discs but they are titles that have not been released on LD or other optical formats.

And on another note, since they too make MOD Bluray-R titles it would be the same for me, I would rather own the LD over a copy IF there is
an LD available.

Almost always choose LD over other formats. Just more fun. The exception is if there is a Criterion Bluray release and not a Criterion release on LD. I like the Criterion releases. If there is one on LD and one on Bluray, I go for the LD release.

I hate those DVD-R releases, I don’t know what MOD stands for but I’d assume it’s a BR version of the same thing.

A while back Rankin Bass’s The Wind in the Willows came out on a DVD-R and I also bought The Manchu Eagle Murder Caper Mystery like that. Both of these had never been released any other way so I got them just to see them but...man, what a ripoff.

I wouldn’t say I prefer LD though necessarily in my case. It would have to be something that there is a DVD-R of and also an LD at some point meaning it got skipped over during the DVD boom and the first decade of BR yet somehow came out as print on demand release. I don’t have any of those and I can’t say I know of any although I’m sure there are many. I’d assume it’s mostly all horror crap.

I’ll get the new burned one but it won’t be my only copy of I can avoid it.

Haven't purchased any of these MOD DVD-Rs but have been tempted to.

I understand the complete DVD series of The Pirates of Dark Water is MOD. I have the Adventure Begins LD which is a mash together of the first 5 episodes. Would be interesting to see how they compare.

The picture quality on the ones that I have are nice but I would rather own an official release than basically a bootleg from the film company.

The Manchu one I got is from MGM and it’s a new transfer, looks amazing. The Willows wasn’t as great but that’s probably because they are using the old TV master.

Both suck though because DVD-R doesn’t last.

I also got Warning from Space recently which is a burn as well. It’s from a really janky company though, I think they only have the movie because it’s public domain by now (they use the US version). This disc locks in at least one of my players.

You need to look for the Eastern Star release, I own that one and it has both the English and Japanese version but on 1 disc.

I can't remember right now if its just the audio that's different or a different cut?
It looks like a bootleg but its real as far as I can tell, and its not MOD.

This uses the original US release for its source so it has English titles and it’s dubbed and everything. It’s a version worth keeping around (if it plays). I have the JP LD which is really all I need. I got this DVD because the price dropped to $5. :)

Yeah I avoid getting those MOD releases. A bit pricey for a sub-optimal release.

I would go for the LD. Can't speak for the two other formats, have no experience with them.
