Post subject:  Advice from the Pros, to a rookie like me, on re-selling!

Hey guys, I looked for a thread on this topic and couldn't seem to find one. I assume the key to re-selling is to buy them cheap (in bulk), and re-sell for a profit. Also, keep an eye out in the off-line world, for people that might not use the Internet, and have LD collections and/or LD players. Is that it? Are there any other solid rules that I must abide by, in order to make it as a reseller?

Do any of you go to fan sites of movies/actors and mention this site? What are some of the best online ways to promote yourself as a reseller?

Or is a lot of it luck and instinct?

oh boy!

this site has become %99 re-seller and %1 actual buyer. Good luck with that supply and demand.

Yeah that's not how it works.

Get into another collectible market to buy and flip for profit.
If you want to make real money get a business license for your town or state and start buying wholesale and selling like the wayfair guys.
Search up that radio interview they just did, they make a little more than you will ever dream of.

Seek traditional employment.

WOW!

Those reactions are sobering, but thanks guys!

I got into this not because I want to make a gazillion bucks, but to try to bring favorite titles to an enthusiastic viewer, like myself. For example, I have a few old comic books that aren't worth much (I checked) but I'd rather sell it to someone who has an emotional want for an issue because it involves one of their favorite plot twists/characters, at a fraction of the price, than to some eager reseller who just wants it to sell, to turn a buck. I was hoping to do that with LDs (if I'm lucky).

I bought the Back to the Future trilogy because I love it and have it on VHS, for the sake of novelty and obscurity, as well as the Hackers LD and Rollerball CED. I have no LD player.

I also bought 4 Lds and a CED for Christmas gifts! So, I am a buyer, to be honest, but not an obsessive one. I love this site, and love a niche market/enthusiastic sub-culture, that caters to something obscure!

I'll see how much fun I can have, and if I get burned for buying in bulk, all the better! I'll have more LDs to rack on my wall!

Thanks guys!

It could be profitable but what we are saying is you are pretty late into the game. There has been a flood of resellers in the past year or two whereas actual collectors shrunk in number. Also, there is very little reason to collect LDs besides nostalgia. You pretty much need to create a hype on some titles to bring up their values. It’s an extremely fluctuating market with only a handful title ever keeping the highly sought after status. And believe me it’s highly unlikely you will come across those super highly sough after titles. They are not blockbusters or disney like you posted but extremely obscure and less than common titles hence rare. I don’t think you will lose any money if you are put the effort into it but 1000 discs? It’s gonna take a couple years to sell at a few bucks a piece.

laserhazer - the post from substance above is a perfect summation, don't think you will get it put any better.

Hey, thanks guys!

Yeah, I recently got enticed by laserdiscs and wanted to get my feet wet in the game, but I can see from what you guys have said, that I should proceed with caution, to say the least!

Also, I have no practical thinking whatsoever...

I wonder if it has anything to do with the prices...

Post subject:  Local newspapers!

I live in Louisiana, with maybe 6 of what you may call "big cities". I'm sure that by now, there are a few homes that have a nice score of laser discs, and maybe even a player, that is just collecting dust. I was debating running ads in the paper to some of the bigger areas, and seeing any potential attention that I could get. Have any of you ever tried this? I'm going to assume that the results vary state to state, and city to city. The only offline functions that I have heard of, that LD enthusiasts do, is garage sales.

Just do craigslist, run an ad saying what you are looking for, its free too.

EDIT: I did an ad once on craigslist when living in TN, tried to play off the I want some for a project so I wouldn't have to overpay.
Only had one person contact and said they had players for sale and that he did adjustments and repairs, also
knew of lddb but seemed to be sort of sketchy, I don't think it was the one fourmer draper but it may have been.

Anyway its years down the pike and I think finding collections in rural places are going to be harder and harder.
Anybody in places like NYC or LA are going to either be younger diehards, died to get rid of collection or someone who lost interest after
seeing the BR of star wars.

Very few are stupid enough to keep moving the mass of common titles that you can get on DVD, BR or streaming for nothing.
Moving = weight, weight costs money so you have to be super attached to that collection to pay to move it again.

If and when I ever move again I will probably dump the common titles to someone or dump on ebay in lots, would try here first, but I
was down to but now up to 280 in my collection, will be knocking that down again very soon, want to be at 200 or less, but its hard
I like too many of them

In my area LD has been pretty dry for LD on Craigslist. I assume this is because of Friendface.

Post subject:  Probability depends on population of area?

I might try the Lafayette, Louisiana area, with the "greater Lafayette" area being about 125,000. I may try the Baton Rouge area, which should be about 220,000. If anything, I'd love to get a real SCORE, just to come back with the story for YOU guys! I love this little laserdisc sub-culture! I called the Lafayette paper today and got the rates for running a classified ad, which was pretty cheap.

Do you know that there are 577 episodes of Pawn Stars?

One of their scouts wanted me to come on with a odd store display I had on ebay, when I told them that my price on ebay is not the
selling price to them.

The scout was fine but they never got back to me.
This close, next time I'll have my rare star wars LDs. :lolno: :lolno: :lolno: :lolno:

Never have anything to do with reality TV people. They are all desperate and underpaid and just want to get their first “real” job so they will say or do anything to get though a days work. If you loan them stuff expect to never get it back the same way again, be it possessions or even real estate.

One year Belle Isle Park paddock area (very in demand) was loaned out to a crappy TV show that liked to smash cars and stuff. It took many hours of SCCA members community service to get all the minute tire shredding debris cleared away...from a paddock area of a f-ing race track.

Read Kurt’s account of the Information Society episode of Bands Reunited. That one is a hoot.

And then there’s all the house flipping propaganda that basically destroyed the economy once already but won’t stop.

And the magnetar level depressing stuff like “I Ate My Own Head”, etc.

Best thing about anyone’s LD collection? There’s no “reality TV” section.
