Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) [SF148-1196]

Beautiful packaging in English primarily and Japanese.
Beautiful 1986 transfer, the first ever in letterbox widescreen, full CAV across 5 sides, no DVNR, no motion smearing, used as the basis for the US letterbox releases from Pioneer and Mitsubishi but with better color and image fidelity. Beats the crap out of the GOUT DVD/Definitive Collection/Faces discs. May be the most balanced color on any transfer of the film and looks similar in places to the US Technidisc issue which used a different print source from the others.
The video is shifted up to make room for the subtitles which were not obtrusive at all.

The audio is the 1985 home remix of the 1977 Dolby Stereo, the same one that is present on all WS release pre-Definitive Collection. All that is different is that 3P0's tractor beam line is added and the dynamic range seems a bit increased. Nice natural level of tape hiss with only a few very minor defects in the high end.

Essential disc for everyone. Now I need ESB and ROTJ to complete the set.

Video: 5/5!!!
Audio: 5/5!!!

JSC ROTJ: http://www.urabanchou.com/index.php?mai ... _id=177685

Sadly, they don't have TESB available.

They had sealed copies of all three a few months back.

I got lucky and got my JSC trilogy off of eBay for $50 from a Japanese seller.

I honestly don't understand why most people prefer the US Definitive Collection.
The Japanese Special Collection not only has a beautiful transfer taken from the original negatives,
but clearly, it's also the true "untampered version".

I recently watched the definitive collection set, I found its flaws less distracting than JSC discs.

same can be said about most hardcore SEGA GENESIS collectors.
only the U.S. editions of the game softs will usually do for them,
despite the fact that the Japanese softs invariably have often great,
sometimes even fantastic box art slavishly replaced by usually half-assed U.S. market art,
and the instruction manuals across the board lose their full color, often art-laden, high-quality presentation
in favor of a typically American B&W barebones just-the-facts approach.

all that is usually in addition to a cartridge with a game program that has often been edited
in some fashion, even if often only in the form of a U.S. title screen...

My experience with US collectors when it comes to video games is that the content it self isn't the main thing. It is the hunt for games. I've been confronted by US collectors more than once for ruining the fun with importing stuff. I should instead go to flea markeds to find stuff. Well, at least here you can't find stuff in the wild. My impression is that in the US you sell things when it gets old, while here people drive old stuff to the skip. I really have no choice but to import, it is at least a lot more convenient.

I think the same thing applies a bit to the US Definitive Collection of Star Wars. It is closer and more convenient for US residents to obtain. Therefore more spoken of, and of course praised. Why import a foreign set when you can get one in the same country? Even better, you could possibly pick one up locally and save the expense on shipping too?

This is a subject that end up with personal taste I guess. Almost everyone I know don't mind the new BD release of the movies. I think the majority don't really care how the audio/video is either on the discs. The US Definitive set is a nice box set though, which I think most people care about. At least my impression of it.

Just a quick peak at why some of us like the JSC over the Definitive Collection. This example is from RotJ. The top is JSC and the bottom is DC. The color has a blue tint and there is less detail from King George's mucking about, a personal choice.

They both have different color timings. I personally am not sure about the JSC. I have to sit down watch them back to back to compare them. Comparing captures or scenes don't do it a justice. I remember watching the JSC and recently watched the DC, JSC had more issues with its picture that stood out in my memory. CLV faces versions are more problematic than these two but I need to spend a little more time on the JSC vs DC.

I only posted the screen shots to demonstrate the color differences. As I stated in my post, I prefer the JSC. The extra noise bothers me less than the excess DNR of the DC. Which one is better is most definitely a personal choice.

I got the JSC of Star Wars and Empire yesterday. The image has nice contrast and good texture, it is rough around the edges in regards to noise and scratches, but it looks naturally detailed. I don't like the warmer colours on the DC/Faces editions, and I don't like the primitive and now outdated DNR applied to them either. I guess the later DC/Faces editions would have looked better on a period piece CRT of the 90's, but on more modern LCD/LED, Plasma, Projectors of today they don't hold up as nicely as the JSC do.

Only thing I don't like about the JSC is that the stars in the space scenes take on a weird blinking appearance, but everything else is great.

I can handle a little DNR, I'm still avoiding extra rocks, random Jabba scenes, and Greedo getting off a shot. :D
