I am interested in collecting (and viewing) the anime Tenchi Muyo; but, I am confused as to which LD's to get. You have Tenchi Muyo, Earth 1, Tenchi Muyo Space 1, Tenchi Muyo in Love, Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki, etc. Which is the first in the series and which LD's are in the series? Help!

PS. I have 2 DVD's ot Tenchi Universe that I have acquired over the years. DVD #1 is Tenchi Universe on Earth I and the second DVD is on Earth II. Should I continue the DVD series instead of collecting the LD's?

Tenchi Muyo #01: Resurrection of Ryoko (1992) [PILA-1133A] is the US release of the first episode of the OVA series. This is the beginning.

Heaven and Earth is the US name for the TV series. It's basically the same thing but smeared tissue thin by stretching it to TV size.

The OVA was planned for six eps but went to 13 with some specials and by the end it pretty much sucked. The first six, as well as the Mihoshi (RIP) and Carnival specials. Are pretty solid stuff. Pioneer wanted its own anime label to move more LDs and gave some good talent to some people who otherwise wouldn't have so much control.

The first movie was OK, not great, but it makes for a great box set. .

They still make a new Tenchi show every once in a while and they all look more bland than the one before.

i was always of the impression that the transliteration of "Tenchi Muyo!" was "No Need for Heaven and Earth!" guess i was mistaken all this time?

Anyway, i was once a hardcore TM! fan, the better part of twenty years ago. in fact, it was one of my first Anime series growing beyond MACROSS/ROBOTECH.

like many, i discovered it in the late-1990's, via showings of the first movie "TENCHI IN LOVE" on SCI-FI channel's "SATURDAY ANIME" programming block.

by 2002 i was as much of a dedicated fan as i could then afford to be, with VHS of the first two movies, the third on DVD, the U.S. CARTOON NETWORK Dub/Edit of the OVAs on four VHS vols.
and merchandise such as the GUARDIANS OF ORDER RPG/SOURCEBOOK and all three of the trio of 12in. Character Dolls TOYNAMI produced. (Tenchi/Ayeka/Ryoko)

indeed, i've those dolls to thank for kickstarting me on a whole new hobby/skillset i had been previously ignorant of, and has come to serve me very well since,
in my more recent years as an Anime Character Doll collector/customizer.

even so, by the latter-half of the decade, i was fairly burnt-out on TENCHI, being able to afford to enjoy some of the fruits of a U.S. Anime market at the height of it's dynamism,
and while i did take the time along the way to acquire the DVD complete collection of the TM! T.V. series, as well as several LDs from a CL listing,
including CARNIVAL, MIHOSHI SPECIAL, PRETTY SAMMY vol.1 and a couple of the OVA vols. by 2010, i was pretty well and truly sick and tired of TM! and had moved on.

today, in 2017, me and my sister really ought to sit down the entirety of the TM! pantheon once more, but i'll be damned if the mere thought
of it's oft-directionless silliness and reams of wasted potential doesn't grate right on our nerves and make either of us quite sick to the stomach.
i think we can both agree that we've both seen enough of TM! to last a lifetime...

I checked the lddb.com for Tenchi Muyo #01: Resurrection of Ryoko (1992) [PILA-1133A]. I think the lddb.com must have an error as it says that there are 4 chapters;but, the LD is 30 minutes long. It seems to be that 7.5 minutes/chapter is a bit short.

I think it was somehow like this, or pretty similar:
Opening = Chapter 1
Part A of the show = Chapter 2
Part B of the show = Chapter 3
Ending = Chapter 4

"Chapter" does not mean episode, its just one episode in that 30 minutes.

Yes, you are right. I wrongly equated a chapter as being an episode.

70 chapters? Methinks the engineer had too much time on his hands that day.

This is normal sequencing for episodic things. This way you can skip the intro if you don't want to see it.

This being as in-house as any Pioneer LD be, it uses all the latest features. The first Tenchi movie was one of the first 5.1 anime LDs. There are some great CAV features on some of those Tenchi LDs too.
