Post subject:  Akira: is there a CAV version with Japanese 5.1 audio?

I was going through the various releases of Akira and got confused by LDDB showing 5.1 tracks as both digital and analog out (for example, Japanese 5.1 was listed as an analog output). I thought 5.1 was a third output?

Is there a CAV version of Akira with Japanese 5.1 audio?

Thanks!

I think you are confused.
Audio on the LDs are Dolby Surround which in this case is a 4 channel.
Front left, right, center and rear.

From the listings it looks like all the CAV versions have the Dolby Surround, but I have no idea with the English tracks, it should also be Dolby Surround.
Good luck.

There is a Criterion CAV Version - but there is also a Criterion CLV Version.
The CAV release has side turns that annoyed me. So I switched it for the
japanese box set [PILA-1086], which is also CAV.

5.1 Dolby Digital LDs of anime are very uncommon. Of the ones that do exist only some are actually significant works. Don't hold out for 5.1 anime LDs.

That being said, the final CLV and CAV versions of The Royal Space Force are very special. If you have an AC3 demod and all that, by all means get Oneamisu no Tsubasa (Wings of Honneamise): Memorial Box (1987) [BEAL-1142]. IMO it's one of the best discs of all time and the movie itself is legendary so it's a no brainer.
