Post subject:  Music featured on both SACD and DVD-Audio?

Since I got the SACD/DVD-Audio player up and running, I started browsing for some SACD titles. Since SACD and DVD-Audio were warring formats, I figured there wouldn't be any exact same titles that were on both formats . . . that is, until I found this:

Fleetwood Mac: "Rumours" SACD
Fleetwood Mac: "Rumours" DVD-Audio

So does anyone else know of any other titles on both formats?

There must have been a few of these. Another example:

The Who - Tommy DVD-A
The Who - Tommy SACD

I think the Fleetwood Mac SACD is fairly recent and uses a slightly different mix. I've heard plenty of people argue about which is better.

I usually listen to the hi-res stereo more than the surround mixes. I'd rather have super quality stereo than some mocked up surround sound!

I agree some stereo mix are better than multich but I love the .LFE on multich discs.

When a surround mix is done well it can sound amazing, but quite often it's obviously a rushed job.

Björk: Medulla and Vespertine

(Where some people experience simultaneous playback of two stereo sacd tracks of one of the 2 sacd's  ).

I only have the Vespertine sacd and Medulla DVDA, so can't compare 1 to 1, although the Medulla DVDA feels like a more natural sound to me than the Vespertine Sacd.
Medulla is nice as it also outputs 24/96 stereo via the optical output. Most DVDA's are restricted to only output 16/48 over optical/coax or not output at all over optical/coax on dvd-a capable players.

I don't know exactly how many titles off-hand there are, but I know that the Japanese division of WEA/Rhino reissued several albums which had been released as DVD-Audio discs as hybrid SACDs. I have two of them: Chicago V and Yes - Fragile.

A lot of SACD's were also released as DVD-Audio and vise-versa...mostly after DVD-Audio became a total flop. Most of those are sourced from the same digital masters they used for DVD-Audio..so often they're created from 24/96 or 24/192 content. I have a couple of SHM-SACDs that even say they were sourced from 24/96 PCM content.

I almost forgot..HOTEL CALIFORNIA! I was lucky enough to acquire a DVD-Audio disc of this back in 2003 when it came out (it's since been destroyed by a bitter ex; but I did manage to "backup" the 24/192 stereo mix); and I also was able to borrow the japanese SACD that came out. I'm 99% sure they basically just converted the 24/192 DVD-Audio to DSD for this release. It didn't sound any better; if anything...the DVD-Audio sounded better.

Now here's another burning question

Were any titles released on DVD-Audio or SACD also released on blu-ray audio?

I know that Supertramp's Breakfast in America was released on both BRA and SACD.

In Japan it's the other way around. Lots of BRA were THEN released on SACD.

Look for the PROC-*, PROT-*, PROZ-* references.

Maybe you can answer this for me, Julien.

I've been trying to find some sites/reviews comparing the blu-ray audio release os Supertramp's Breakfast In America vs the SACD release.

Those are few and far between, but I see at least two posters on the SACD board saying that the Japanese SACD-SHM release is the superior version while the US released SACD is lacking.

Do you know if the US and Japanese SACD releases were mastered differently?

For Warner USA, these were coming from the DVD Audio catalog and converted for SACD indeed:

I have none of the DVD Audio but managed to get some of the SACDs.

I have the DVD-Audio releases for Chicago V, Hotel California, Fragile and Rumours. I believe they all have 24 bit/192khz stereo tracks so I can't imagine the SACDs being an upgrade.

In the case of Fragile though, Panegyric also re-released that on DVD-Audio as well as blu-ray audio; remastered by Steve Wilson.
