so I came home today from work and at my door step is the rare Red Laser CLD-1010
Grasshopper goes above and beyond and its pretty amazing for him to send me this player
to test and review.

just played some stuff on it and can't give a full review of playback of the 1010 yet.

the build quality is so-so for the time, the front panel is very thin feeling and buttons are very light.
there are no round feet on the bottom of the player only rubber pads which I think is very strange to see.
the player is nice and heavy, it is also one of the first combo players to play the CD format.

I will watch some films over the next few weeks on the player to give an idea to all how the famous Red Laser really preforms.
thanks again to the best Grasshopper who not only fixed a few of my player but also got them back to me in a reasonable time.
and have gone above and beyond the call of LD and Electronics tech  .

Rein-O!!! How is that 1010 coming along?

I know a few on here use them from time to time and keep one for a back-up when their reference player needs a little TLC.

I agree, Pioneer really cut corners on quality on the face_plate..

Keep us posted!!!!

I'm interested in your thoughts, I don't know why, but the 1010 has always been appealing to me. Though I believe picture/sound wise it'd be a downgrade from my current player.

i came close to owning a well kept 1010 with remote, manual and a few discs for like $50 on PORTLAND OR. CL about eight/ten years ago.

couldn't manage a meet up before i left PORTLAND, so it didn't work out, ended up, eventually, with a rough condition LD-838D instead,
and had to make due with that until i grabbed my first CLD-3030 for like $40 or so off the BAY, it too was with remote manual and six discs...

what player do you have now???

as for the 1010 it is a basic player, no trick play on CLV discs.
the real upside to this player is the red laser, and the separate spindle for CD playback is a real nice feature so you
don't burn it up on over playing too many CDs.

will test this out over the week with my LED and Projector and will try to take some pictures.

you sure the 1010 has the twin spindle system? it's form factor seems far to small to employ such a design feature, considering the massive cow
that the 1984 CLD-900 is, the very first Combi LDP, and the only one, to my knowledge, that employed a twin-spindle system;

http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laser ... ld-900.htm

http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laser ... d-9000.htm

is it actually possible that PIONEER managed to miniaturize such a mechanism into the 1010 in the span of just a couple years?

rein-o, my current player is a D703, which I've thoroughly been enjoying. I'm just curious about other players, better or worse. I remember someone on ol' craigslist was selling a 1010 in the Vancouver, Wa area, but never went through with it. My current backup is a V2400, which has been reliable, but nothing fancy.

finally getting time to sit down and fully enjoy this amazing player.

watching Predator (1987) [1515-85]

even though the pressing is from 1991 its one of those films that really pushes the limits of the LD format.
you have lots of outdoor scenes, red scenes inside the copter and night scenes.

player shows very little white smear.
the reds are amazing, showing very little Chroma noise, even in the sky scenes.

I would say the CLD-1010 is a really nice player overall, where it is lacking in the outer materials it makes up for in the playback
department.

from the players I have had over the years I would recommend this player to anybody looking for a really nice unique player.
there is no trick play on CLV discs and it is a single sided player only.

i wonder how it would compare to it's immediate successor, the 1988 CLD-3030? very similar in features, but with digitally-assisted trick play options for both CAV and CLV.

AFAIK, the 3030 was second ever LD player, after the ELITE LD-S1, -as well as the very first CLD- model- to feature such digital effects...

Thanks for the update rein-o, I've convinced myself that if I run across one locally for a fair price I'll pick it up, lacking in features, but seems like a decent player overall. Though I wouldn't mind running across a decent 3030 either.

It is no joke that the front is skimpy. I bought one on ebay for a decent price, in really good condition, and it arrived at my doorstep smashed and unusable. UPS said it was improperly packed, and wouldn't refund. I made a compromise with the seller and kept it.

I need the front right circuit board for repair, as you look at the unit (if anyone has one). When I contacted Duncan about it, he said he didn't have any and it was a common failure point.

I didn't even get a chance to test it.

Sorry to hear about the bad news Tony. I actually picked up a 1010 locally over last Thanksgiving because of this thread. It's a great backup to my S1 and it's the player I use on any of my "problem" discs.

Unfortunately this is a flaw on the 1010
Grasshopper has talked about this many times, if not packed correctly it will smash the front in as its very fragile.
the best thing to do is try and rebuild the board that is broken, a very common issue that any electrical repair can do.
wires to make jumpers fixing the broken traces etc and glue to make it solid.
not impossible just takes time and your only option.

hmm. in that case, i'd assert that the comparatively rugged 3030 is quite the net improvement all around...

The more rugged LD-S1 is even better ;)
its a stronger player and also gives you better picture quality and is overall a tank with a special one of a kind laser and spindle
that is NOT used in any other player

i wouldn't mind an S1, but there are a LOT more 1030 and 3030's worth of spare parts and transport mechanisms out there.

further, that apparently fragile front panel control panel door,
that half to 3/4 of the LD-S1s i see for sale out there have completely broken away,
tends to make me exceptionally nervous.

the 3030, OTOH, is reasonably rugged, reliable, easy to service, and exceptionally attractive looking to my personal eye,
especially after the cosmetic/enhanced vibration suppression mods i have made to mine.

Someday, i just may yet own an S1, but in the mean, my 3030 personally satisfies...
