I own all 30(2.5 seasons) of the US released DS9 discs and all 5 seasons(S6,7 were never released) of the Japanese released discs. I also own all 89 (maybe missing few) US released TNG discs and have the opportunity to get all 7 seasons on Japanese box sets. Is there any reason I should hold onto both US and Japanese discs? better picture on one than the other or different content?

Depends on if the Japanese version is hard-subbed. Otherwise they're hopefully based off the same D2 master tape data.

For TNG I'd suggest spending the money on the Blu Ray's and keeping the LD's around to have the 'original' versions if you want. But I have doubts DS9 will get the same treatment - the best I hope for is something like the Babylon 5 treatment (but less ghastly) with a fresh live action film transfer and upscaled effects shots, especially after season 3 or so.

With your equipment you could probably make the best digital versions of DS9 without somehow getting a hold of the D2's :)

(general advice to people wandering into this thread) I'd skip the DVD's though, since they didn't bother to fully comb filter the composite masters. Might as well watch them via streaming if you've got it, IMO.

I own the blurays for tng,tos and enterprise. There is 1 ds9 episode on tos s3 bluray as extras. it is not that great.

They didnt include the unaltered versions for tng on bd. So I will keep the tng lds but not sure if I should stick with us versions or get japanese box sets.

I thought the Star Trek TNG Blu Ray releases look absolutely gorgeous. It is like
watching an entirely new series. The quality is just ... fantastic !

I have most DS 9 on UK VHS tapes, good enough for me. I would like to have the Laserdiscs
of course but I am happy with the VHS tapes.

Btw, substance. Thank you for pointing out there is a DS9 episode in HD included in the 3rd season
release of TOS. I really did not know that ! Cheers !

I had a chance to check one of the DS9 DVD's... it looks like they re-telecined the film/non-fx bits, I couldn't pick out any artifacting and the pulldown flags are set right. The FX scenes were run through an imperfect 2D comb filter, however - the logo had horizontal dot crawl on the top orangy lines, and there's quite a bit of cross color on DS9 itself.

I do not have the DVD or BluRay from TNG because of,
the LDs and VHS look just greater on Display :geek:
the best part beeing a collector, I never watched any,
because I have seen them in TV many many times,
guess have to do that on some spare time ...
The USA looks good but I liked the black Japan boxsets much more
Star Trek Collection

Sadly that the Voyager boxart is too boring, the 5th season is the coolest artwork and 2 of the last 10 LDs

The Blu ray of TNG totally blows away the DVD versions. They still have all the external CGI renderings so a full BD treatment is possible for DS9 which should help the show out greatly. All they have to do is do a new CGI 1080p rendering. I'm almost certain they will begin DS9 Blu ray right after TNG is done next year. Personally I think the LD versions of these are way over priced and I'd never actually watch them. I'd list them and see what they go for. I have a few of the TOS but I just like looking at the covers, that's about it.

Isn't Sub Rosa on the US release missing about 5 minutes?

I have all the Japanese sets. I've been meaning to scan the covers for all the discs - for YEARS - but just haven't gotten around to it. I do have all of TOS and Season 1 of TNG scanned and on my web site. I've been meaning to do the others.

Pioneer was made aware of the missing footage on Sub Rosa and the verified they had a faulty D1 tape from Paramount. They were going to correct it on the next pressing run - but there never was another run. The episodes are typically bilingual on the Japanese discs, so only the occasional subtitle.

FWIW, I found the DS9 DVDs to be decent, but I was also watching on an SDTV. The LD could conceivably be better on an SDTV, but DVD is far easier to scale to an acceptable quality than LDs for HDTVs.

From what little I've seen, the earlier DS9 DVD's were only composite mastered for the FX scenes. I should see if the later ones are component all the way through.

The problem is they didn't use a great comb filter for the composite bits...
