X-Files TV seasons were mostly shot on 35mm film except special effects and some scenes which were on video. The entire show was edited on video therefor forever locked into NTSC unless they re-did sfx and re-edit the entire show from original 35mm negative/positives (if they still exist).

Show was broadcast 4:3 for the first 4 seasons then switched to 16:9 for the rest(super 35).

Japanese LDs go all the way up to end of season 7. They are all in 4:3 format with forced Japanese subtitles on original dolby surround soundtrack.

Dvd releases are fs for 1-4 and 16:9 afterwards. They are all re-mixed to 5.1 dolby digital.

How would you watch the entite show if you had all the LDs?

1- Watch entirely on DVD?
2- First 4 seasons on LD then DVD?
3- First 7 seasons on LD only?
4- First 7 seasons on LD then DVD?

Note: there is a good chance 5-7 seasons LDs are open matte.

X-Files: Fight the future happens before season 5. Would you watch it between seasons 4 and 5?

On DD LD? DTS LD? Blu-ray?

Would you watch I want to believe right at the end? How about lone gunman and millennium spinoffs?

Millennium is awesome! I love it!
Please give it a try, too!

How I watched X-Files (a long time ago...)
Seasons 1-6 on TV -> then re-watched all on LD
Had seen season 7 on LD before it was on TV over here I think.
Or maybe I just skipped the TV version of that season.
Too bad season 8 did not make it.

Tough question. I watched the whole series on dvd. Now I try and collect all the UK an US releases on laserdisc. I own all vhs releases except one (dreamland).
Because of the Japanese subs and the picture quality I think I would still watch the show on dvd. The laserdiscs are more collectors items for me.
And I would watch the movie between seasons 4 and 5. I Want to Believe at the end.

I am watching The Lone Gunmen now for the first time. It's not to smart but likeable if you love The X-Files.
Had to import a region 1 box to see this. Millennium will be next.

Actually laserdisc sets picture quality is marked improvement over DVDs, especially the first few seasons. DVDs were mastered from NTSC source (probably same one as LDs) with a poor comb filter. LDs are considerably sharper and no compression artifacts.

Season 5 and on were broadcast in 16:9 and DVDs use that. Lds are 4:3 open matte. Here DVDs get a bit sharper but still highly compressed.

I never owned the US LDs but they are probably same as Japanese Lds without subs. They only released 22 select episodes from 1st 4 seasons in the US. In Japan they released 7 complete seasons. Entire Millennium series. None for longunman

First I watched on TV, then partially on VHS and at last I ordered the complete DVD box edition (German version). This was a "must have" box edition for me, and since then no more TV watching, only on DVD now. ;)

Now your all going to kill me, but I love X files and I am collecting them Laserdisc after having all the DVd's, the first film on Laserdisc, and the second on blu ray. But the series I prefer to watch on NETFLIX...as they are all in HD and look amazing. Sadly the first 4 seasons have been cropped and zoomed with sharpening applied and are slightly darker than the Laserdiscs. But are a marked improvement across the board, even the special effects.

Yes, me as well. I have copies from the German HD airings and they are beautiful. I'm making my way through the series in HD. I'm on Season 2. I sold my Japanese imports several years back.

I spot checked some episodes on dvd and ld. Dvds get better around season 3, even season 2 is improved from season 1 in terms pq. Late seasons like 6 and on look much better on DVD. In the US if you buy the complete seasons set or the 1st print fat box sets, you get a lot of extras. Later slim versions are barebones with no extras. Lds are almost barebones. I don't recall any extras.

The film on ld is a fine transfer. No aliasing or major anamolies. Being a thx release, it has some noise reduction applied to it and it smears. If my memory serves me well, the japanese release has blacks at 0ire so it might look darker but it should look correctly when setup right. Bluray release is very good and definitive way of watching this film.

Never seen any of the seasons on LD, but I have season 6 on DVD and the quality is pretty bad, compression artifacts and smeary. I also have the first movie on DVD as well, and it looks a lot better in terms of PQ than the season 6 set.

X-Files the complete series is coming out on December 8th on Blu-ray disc. There have been rumors in the past 2 years that there was a work going on, mastering X-Files episodes into HD. In January 2016, season 10 with its 6 newly made episodes will be aired. SRP for the box set is $300 but expect to pay around $130-150 on the release week.

If they will include the original aspect ratio of the first seasons as well as the new widescreen presentation, I'm really excited for this!
Two years of HD mastering of the complete X-files series isn't that bad, considering the Star Trek TNG HD restoration took almost the same amount of time.

Just noticed that the blu-ray set was coming out. Pretty expensive in Sweden espec. compared to how extremly cheap the complete collection is on dvd now.
Would be nice to get complete Jap set on LD, not that easy to find all of them though.

I think they will only do the new 1.78:1 widescreen aspect ratio even on early seasons. You see some more on each side but lose some up and below. DVDs have the broadcast aspect ratio on the first 4 seasons. Rare instance LD actually looks better than the DVDs.

You are correct, Substance. All the seasons will be presented in 1.78:1, though rumor has it that Fox are sitting on a full screen restoration as well, but I don't think it will see the light of day, even if the rumors are to be true.
Have been following the forum threads over at Blu-ray.com and I'm really excited for it to be released at all. Very interesting posts and lots of screen comparisons between the dvd release and the german HD channel.
From a subjective point of view, I can truly see in the image of some shots that it was composed with the 4:3 (tv aspect ratio) in mind, but they are claiming it was protected for the 16:9.
As with S.T:TNG, some upscaled material will be included as the negatives where not found/lost and some of the effects has no original source to provide a high resolution shot and therefore upscaled due to budget, I believe.
