Post subject:  RetroTINK-4K - Any experience?

I now have been looking a while for a way to get some improvement on the picture quality when watching laserdisc.

My current setup looks pretty decent (at least better than I expected without specialized hardware) but better is better... I guess? :lol:

CLD-2950 -> Marantz SR6014 -> LG OLED CX9LA77

I tried some cheaper scalers (between 200-300€) but all of them did put out a way worse picture than I was hoping for / already get with the AV/TV combo I use.
Getting hands on a Lumagen Radiance or similar here in Europe is a likely as winning the lottery (aside from the price).

Recently the new RetroTINK-4K has caught my attention.
Of course I am aware this is a scaler focused on retro gaming, but looking at a few details and features like BFI and amazing CRT simulation I thought this might be worth a try.
The first batch is already sold out, but maybe I am able to get my hands on it end of January when there should be a new run available. :think:

However I cannot find any information regarding the comb filter! :evil:
Does anyone of you guys know if this might be worth an (expensive) shot or should I wait for the SingMai FPGA?
What comb filter do they use?

I expect the 4k to perform way better than the 5X or 2X especially looking at the price point and the very expensive chip on the 4K (but this is pure guessing).

Any input from you scaler-experts is highly appreciated!

Cheers,
Markus

Just buy a better TV rather than an endless parade of black boxes.

Since the intended use is video consoles, I would be very sceptical regarding its video performance. But that's just gut feeling.
I use a jvc scaler, a Faroudja dvp-1010 clone. I'm very happy with the results. My Pioneer dvl-700 puts out a sharper picture through S-Video compared to Composite, so in my case, an external comb filter would not make any sense.

@Zeta:
Get rid of a TV that is excellent for all of my usecases except LD?
Nope. :mrgreen:

@Roland:
I agree! That's my feeling as well therefore the question.
I find the CRT simulation with HDR + BFI very interesting...

Maybe I will just wait a bit longer. There sure is someone to test it with LD or VHS in the near future or someone else will check in who already tried it. :thumbup:

CRT simulation for films? That’s some goofy backwards retro knob polishing right there. I don’t want scan lines, fake or real, in a movie that was shot on film. I’m trying to reduce the issues with NTSC, not magnify them.

Does it also have a filter to simulate having a round faced tube and maybe a coil for that old school “shock” when you touch the screen?

Where's the degauss button? ;-)

@Julien:
You have to sing a specific combinations of notes in d-minor to enable the auto-degaussing feature. :lol:

@Zeta:
I find the feature quite intriguing. But you might be right: After 10 minutes you probably are sick of it.
Mainly I would be interested in this feature for the small amount of retro gaming stuff I kept (sold a bunch a few years ago) my hands on.
But my intention is for use with LD primarily.

Maybe there is some news about the SingMai thingy in the near future.
Lets face it: If you are crazy enough to spend 750$ on the TINK you should be able to bring up in the additional 250$ for hardware that is actually designed for the job (in case it is any good).

Cheers,
Markus

As far as movies are concerned, IMO the main draw of the RT4K is black frame insertion, which emulates the look of projected film. Not sure if that will make it worth its price for most people, though.

Do-It-Yourself Color TV - 1962

Color television wasn't widespread until 1966, but some Swedes armed with nylon stockings tried to get it four years earlier. They fell victim to a hoax by Sweden's Sveriges Television, which trotted out a "technical expert" to explain on-air — in thoroughly technical terms — how a thinly stretched nylon screen in front of a television would bend light's wavelengths and produce a color image. The thousands who tried it learned quickly that there was no such trick — and were out a pair of stockings to boot.

Let’s hope a Retrotink firmware update will include some sort of emulation of this historically significant version of color TV. There’s no way I’m buying this thing until “looking through someone’s underwear at fake color TV” mode is implemented.

Saw that Mike Chi, the creator of RetroTink has added, then overhauled the motion-adaptive deinterlacer. Now he’s tinkering with a 3D comb filter. The guy is no slouch when it comes to adding features and tweakability. Also, I suspect a certain overlap between some of us LD fans and fans of retrogaming.

Thanks for the update!
This might change it to an „take my money“ moment for me.

The 3D comb filter looks really promising, even in its infancy.

The comb filter combined with the tweakable MA deinterlacer makes the RT4K a rather enticing proposition for a LD enthusiast!

Post subject:  Re: RetroTINK-4K - Any experience?

Short update:
Yesterday a new firmware for the 4k has been released.

---

New RT4K Stable Firmware! This one adds quite a number of new features:

- XBR smoothing
- Enhanced S-video
- 3D comb filter for composite video
- Minimized glitches during resolution changes

and more!

---

Now it starts to get pretty interesting.
Of course I missed the latest batch of devices. Everything was sold out instantly. :crazy:

Lets see when the first LD enthusiast gets his hands on one of these to play with the com filter.

The complete Changelog:

Changelog:
- Added XBR Smoothing
- Added Enhanced S-video
- Improved chroma response/sharpness for regular S-video
- Added 3D Comb filter for NTSC composite video
- Improved PAL composite and S-video
- Improved ability to track and hold poor VHS signals
- Improved MiSTer DV/Analogue decimation detection
- Minimized glitching during horizontal resolution changes
- Added option to blank video during major resolution chanes to minimize visual glitches
- Improved S/PDIF detection
- Various bug fixes

Post subject:  Re: RetroTINK-4K - Any experience?

I received my RT 4k a few weeks ago. I am running a MLD-7020 via S-video into the DB15 port using the laserbear adapter for the enhanced s-video feature. Laserdiscs have never looked this good. I am very interested in this thread and looking forward to sharing optimal settings in the RT 4k.

So far I have found Motion Adaptive algorithm, inverse Telecine on, dejudder on, MDA set to max. These all seemed to help the picture for me. What else should I be setting the profile to?

Okay... I will definitely try to get one from the next batch.

Glad to hear you got some great results! :D

Did you try to 3d comb filter?
